*****If it does end up being the rear main seal, it's not TOO bad of a job if you have decent attention to detail. Make sure you replace it with the newer neoprene seal and not the old style rope seal which was worthless. Also, move the new seal a bit so that it's meeting edges aren't in line with the main cap and oil pan line. If you have original motor mounts, the motor might be sitting a bit lower than when it came out of the showroom so it can get tight down there. If it's really a mess down there, I would just degrease the heck out of everything first so it makes it easier to take it apart and see everything.
I've used both cork and rubber oil pan gaskets when doing the change, and I like cork now. Don't be cheap and get a good quality gasket set, as there are easier jobs out there and you don't want to do it twice!
