So.. I worked a little on my timing/fuel map yesterday to get some more mileage out of my car that I barely drive. I know that I was getting for sure less that 10 mpg and it sucks to have to put gas it in almost every time I got out. I have it cleaned up quite a bit AND confident that mileage is substantially better. However... I wonder:

I remember seeing in an old "chip" that was a very very good mileage chip that the cruise timing was very low. I think its was 28* and maybe lower and the car got almost 30mpg on long highway trips. EGTs were in the 800-1100 range. I don't know what my EGTs are doing yet. The engine setup is identical but with ported champions instead of ported irons. So, I duplicated the low timing thinking it would require less fuel - leaning out my fuel map too to high 14's and low 15's AFRs...

The car seemed to drive fine, but seemed to get really heat soaked going down the highway (I do know that inadequate airflow through my big front mount and radiator are probably the primary issue here). But wondering what others experiences have been with fine tuning for 65-75mph cruising? Or evening 35-40mph city cruising.

It drives totally fine, but am I better of putting more timing in it, but still leaning it out as above?

Thanks.....

Less timing is wasting fuel making the engine less efficient, I would run the maximum timing you can at cruise speeds without surging. The only way to prove your theory is to log the average mpg going the same speed and distance each time.

More timing, leaner mixture!
