I thought I was having a routing problem with my speedo cable after it quit about a week into driving it after doing a engine trans rebuild. It had bothered me before but I just let it go. It will engage, but bounce all around if at all if I get into it good, but it also dies right after.
The speedo was trying to work tonight. For some reason when I was just rolling about 35mph, I shifted into nutral and the speedo went rock solid perfect 35mph. I tried thia a few times, same results, perfect speedo needle.
I was going to get a new lower cable now I wonder if that is the problem.
The cable was lubed very well before I put the trans back in.
Any thoughts??

Are you sure it is engaged properly into the transmission? Is the tab with the bolt square against the speedo cables flat or indexed screw in cap.

I wonder if the VSS has anything to do with it. I think that has more to do with the ECU for TCC and also cruise control. Worth thinking about as you try to resolve your issue.

I do not think it's the VSS. If I turn the upper cable by hand the needle works just fine. I'll open up the lower end today and take a look for something. I did look at the gear during the rebuild and would have replaced it if I found anything.
Why steady in N and not in D.
