I have about 250 miles on new short block, I have a annoying lifter tick
sound at a idle but goes away with light throttle . They are Gm lifters from weber racing. Good average oil pressure 18-20lb hot idle Any Ideas???

If you broke it in properly it should be good to go. I have a flat tappet cam in my car from the buick club. 210-205 cam. Its been noisy since I got the engine together a couple of years ago. I changed the lifters to GM ones and the noise was still there. I have great oil press. too. Other that a little ticking at idle the car runs like a bat out of hell. I just learn to live with the noise my car makes. Funny thing is my buddys car has the same exact camshaft and his runs a quiet as the stocker.

If your really concerned about it pull the valve covers off and start it up to make sure each lifter is spinning as it should be. If I remember right the #3 exhaust lobe the lifter should spin in the opposite direction than the other lifters.

mine does the exact same thing. sometimes it is quiet all the time.
runs like a raped ape.

i have the 204/214 cam and speedpro lifters. i changed them twice and still the same noise. hv cover and oil pressure is great hot or cold.

i guess from the posts it is a common problem for some.

Hi,
Lifter preload might be your culprit. I am in the final stages of engine assembly with my regal, and am using comp cams mildest hydraulic flat tappet cam. I believe it is 206/206 and .425 lift. Anyway, the lobe circle is different on my cam, and my stock pushrods were about .060" too long. I had something like .090 lifter preload, and comp recommends .020-.040. There are several ways to correct this, but as I am putting it together with stock heads and rocker arms/shafts, I elected to change pushrods.a friend suggested smith bros.,and if you check it out, they are pretty good.Anyway, for about $125 shipped, they made up a set of proper length rods, twice the strength of original, and they tell me if I have problems, they can fix it.I installed them, and by the dial indicator, I now have somewhere around the .030 that was recommended. We shall see, soon,if the valves are noisy.
You know, a bunch of different stuff affects this parameter, including your cylinder head /metal removal, block deck height, rocker arm and rocker shaft wear, and cam and lifters. Get it right, then noise chances are lessened. If I had just bolted it together with all that preload, lobe failure and also lifter problems could have been the result.Tick, Tick, or worse! This is food for thought; good luck with your trouble....
