I have no Idea if the tranny in the GN has ever been worked on/out or what but when I first got it with 107,xxx miles on it, it would break the tires loose when shifting from 1st to 2nd and it was still firm from 2nd to 3rd. Around 125,000 miles it seemed to flare a little going from 2nd to 3rd and it would only chirp the tires from 1st to 2nd. Well, this morning I had a Rustang GT next to me blaring his stereo giving me a look, I stomped on it from the light and when the tranny hit 3rd gear it acted as though I threw the shifter into neutral! This is the 2nd time it has done this, but normal driving (even with boost around 12-14) it seems to shift normal, has the right amount of fluid in it, not burnt, had the filter replaced about 2,000 miles back. The car now has 139,xxx miles, is there anything to do besides have GnEric about 2.5 hours south of me do a complete rebuild?

I'm going to say that there is a good chance that your transmission may have ingested some air due to slosh/cavitation. Couple that with your transmission's tendency to flare now. The 2-3 shift demands quite a volume of fluid as it is filling the direct drum while simultaneously filling the release side of the servo. Correct timing of these events is essential.

Your servo released before the direct clutch applied. You essentially had an extreme 2-3 shift flare.

Thanks Greg, but after checking fluid level and some "normal" driving, it seems to do this everytime when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd at anything more than 10 pounds of boost :(
