I just purchased my hurst olds and I was wondering if it had the G80 or not. The guy I bought it off of said it was the limited slip, but when I raised the rear wheels they spun in different directions. The car has all the bells and whistles, power everything with t-tops, so I assume that it would have the G80 as well seeing how it had every other option off factory. Well, the car always posi's on gravel and snow, and whenever turning corners it seems to want to posi but if you do a burnout on pavement its a one-wheel wonder! If the drivers side tire is on smoother pavement it will posi at the start but then switch to one tire. The guy had 2 apprasels done on the car, and on both the sheets claimed it had the limited slip 3.73 gears in it. Do they check to see if its the limited slip when they do the appriasel. The car doesn't have the trunk sticker on it, with all the factory codes. Any input is appreciated, and if it is a limited slip and the clutches are screwed, how much does a rebuild kit go for and where does a person go about gettin one, thanks!!

Is the RPO sticker still on trunk lid? It'll be in there.

Wheels spinning in different directions is a bad sign, but not quite the end of the world. Best case you have the LSD, but the clutches are shot. Pull it and have it rebuilt.

Worst case, somebody swapped the LSD out for an open and sold the LSD.

Should be less than $100 for the parts to rebuild the posi. The carrier stays in the rear, you just have to replace the clutches, some shims, and most likely the little bolt that holds the cross-shaft in place. Plus some really stinky lubricant. I think most of the posi rears had a little tag under one of the bolts in the cover that tells you it's a posi. They put them there to make sure that mechanics use the right lube. There's also a code stamped into the axle housing on the passenger side, but you'll have to get the Olds book to see what the code for the posi is, prob'ly not the same as a Buick.

Ya, the RPO sticker thats supposed to be in the trunk is not there, apparently they didn't put the stickers in there in 1983. There is no tag on the diff. bolt, but that could have broke off a long time ago. I am just wondering if they check when they do an appraisal cause both that were done claims it has a limited slip 3.73. If it is and the clutches are shot, is it goin to hurt it to continue to drive the car?? Where is the best place to get the rebuild kits? All 83's came with 7.5" rear ends as well, thanks!

Axle codes are sometimes found on the passengers side (right side) axle tube on the front side usually or sometimes top of the tube.

Hard to see without cleaning them off good.

That should have most of the proper information in the code unless the unit itself has been modified or changed.

I didn't think the Hurst-Olds rear was a 7.5", thought it was an 8.5", like the GNs. So, worst case would NOT be that somebody took out the posi, worst case would be that somebody took out an 8.5", and swappped in a 7.5".
If it is indeed the 7.5", the code for the 3.73 posi is"BF", for the 3.73 open, it is "AF". (those are for 1983 G bodies)

guess its open

Well, I just looked underneath the car today and the code is 2AF O 047, so I guess its got the stupid open differential in it! Not sure why it likes to posi a lot of the time, unless he installed one a long time ago. I also guess they don't check when they do appraisal's either, seeing how 2 were done and they both claimed it had the limited slip, 3.73!! Oh well, thanks for all your help!!
