whats the difference in a lockup or non lockup converter? is one better than the other??

A lockup converter will connect the input shaft of the trans directly to the flywheel basically like a manual clutch controlled by the computer to improve driveability. One isn't any better than the other. What determines which to use is mods to the car and how the car will be used. If it's a daily driver with occational trips to the track, go with a lockup. If it's a highly modified car and see's mostly track time, go with a non-lockup.

just what he said ..if ya want more info just do a search ... it has been a hot topic before

thanks

other factors are related to operating efficiency.the weight of the lock up converter is in some cases 20 lbs heavier than a non lock up converter.the heavier weight may in some cases increase the time it takes the engine during turbo spool up to reach a usable rpm and exhaust volume necessary to effectively drive the turbo and create boost.converter charge and how the oil enters and exits the converter are also vastly different between the 2.typically with the same line pressures the non lock up converter and the valving necessary to allow it operate properly on the 2004r are higher than the lock up style.this can affect craankshaft thrust durability in high powered or transbrake applications.the lock up converter does provide sort of a win win situation when high stall is needed with a larger turbo on street applications ,but cruise rpm must be kept to a minimum.beyond 10.5s or and when properly designed the non lock up almost always outperforms its counterpart in et .mikester2s information is similar to my idealogy of when to use each one depending on operating environment and intended use.
