long shifts

I'll try to explain this as best I can. First off two things that probably don't have anything to do with my problem, I can't get my shifter into 1st gear manually, it's not that it won't go in gear theres just no more room to push shifter back to get in 1st gear, second my trans started acting up after a quick run down main street in all 4 gears. The car seems to take way too long to shift to second, sometime all gears, did depend on how fast I was going but now it seems worse. Drove the car yesterday to pa and back, and had my usual encounters on the highway(mustangs) but the car just doesn't have the get up and go that it used to. Before I would gun it, it would downshift and then take off, now when you gun it, it feels like your in neutral, then it catches and goes, and when I let of the gas it gets real quiet, I thought the car was off, then I give it gas and it revs like in neutral again and then catches. What gives!!! Haven't had the pan off to investigate yet, but do plan on it. Could this be my valve springs and not the trans at all??

Things to do (if you haven't already):

• Change transmission fluid and filter.
• Readjust your shifter linkage.
• Readjust the TV cable.
• Get new valve springs; especially if yours are 90,000+ mile originals.
