Winding up my latest build and realized that I neglected to buy a bigger pan and windage tray. Google search wasn't helpful either.
I understand that if I deepen the pan and the pickup, there needs to be an angle somewhere to facilitate easier engine installation. How deep are aftermarket pans, and can anyone post pics and/or dimensions? I'd like a windage tray too, but at my self imposed RPM limit of 5800/6000 rpm, I don't know if it would be worth it.
I'm looking for a vendor that has one IN STOCK as I will be ready to install it right after the first of the year, or build my own.
I know, "poor planning on my part,does not constitute an emergency on your part." But I have been so anal about the engine, I blew off the ancillary externals.

RJC pan here , modified by Dave Husek. I believe he moved the windage tray .

I lengthened mine 2” in the same area as the RJC pan as well as the pickup tube.
I measured the pan vs. the crossmember, however, I didn’t account for the drain plug. The pan is flush with the crossmember, but the drain plug is below it. I’m at stock height so I haven’t knocked it off…………yet. Going on 30yrs now.🤞
I did this when I replaced the rear main seal while the engine was in the car. I noticed the full mark of the dipstick appeared to be above the counter weights on the crank. Looking back, I may have bumped the dipstick and pushed it up a bit.
I parked the car on a level part of the driveway, with 6qts of oil and PF52 filter
I started trimming the top off the dipstick tube until the full mark of the dipstick was at oil level.

A side note: I dropped the pan, but it wouldn’t come out so I took out the pickup tube bolts from between the block and the pan. I let the pickup tube fall into the pan and removed the oil pan.
I reversed the process for reassembly.
 
Tim, The RJC pan works really well on my car, if that helps.

I'm sure you can look at it, and see how you feel it should be modified, if at all, immediately.

GX1, how does the pan with side kickoffs clear the exhaust crossover? I have T/A race headers. Will they the crossover be near it? Which is the best place for the drain plug? My engine hasn't been in my car for nearly 3 years now and I forgot how much room is around the pan. I like the idea of wider rather than deeper as my Turbo coupe is lowered 2" in the front.

I just have a 2” deeper pan on mine. I saved the photos of the pan with kick outs for reference to build one similar.
As for the drain plug, the stock oil pan has rolled threads that go inside the pan and hold oil. A weld on bung type drain plug setup would allow all the oil to drain.
I feel having the drain plug on the bottom towards the rear would be ideal since the engine is angled down at the back.
I figured I would mock up the current pan with cardboard before removing it.
It seems the kick outs would be forward of the crossover and should be ok, but can’t verify that. I’m sorry I can’t be more help.
 
Well, a good morning after all! First thing, I got a call from Jason (RJC). And he says he knows I need an oil pan! We talked about my needs, and next thing ya know he says he will send me a deep pan, a roadrace baffle, pickup extension and gasket TODAY! For those not reading this currently, it is between Christmas and New Years! Most everybody else in the industry is closed til after New Years!
He had already checked my card before he called and it had expired, could I give him the new date and security code, and he would ship this morning!
THAT folks is customer service! AND why he is my first call when I need Buick
parts!
Now I'm back on track to getting my car together ASAP!

Jason usually has my stuff shipped before we hang up the phone. I cant say enough for his products and service !
 
drain plug locations is import ,but most change oil before its dirty. second oil filter choice is so often discussed We have chosen one that is doing a good job too.
The deep pan only job is to give the oil time to cool. Road racers need it because of sustained long periods of load. and G forces in all directions.
If we drag race the main purpose is keeping the pickup submerge at all times. I personally think a well designed windage tray would more beneficial than a crank scraper.
 
Not to hijack, but will a FWD pan fit my 87 20bolt turbo engine? swapping it into a custom application. Looking on summit the pan gasket is the same for the 87 olds tornado, and the oil pan is a full length sump. I am looking to make a mid/front sump pan, and it appears if I can use the FWD pan I am 1/2 way there.. anyone know for sure?
