Magnavox Ignition Modules

It is a short list.
1986-88 Grand Am,Somerset,Skylark,Calais 3.0 V-6 VIN-L
1986-88 Century,Ciera,Electra,Park Ave,Lesabre,Riviera,Olds 88,Olds 98,Toronado,Bonneville 3.8 V-6 VIN-3 & VIN-B
1986-87 TR VIN-7
1989 TTA VIN-7

The VIN code is the 8th digit of the VIN.

FYI, for the coil packs, I went to www.gnttype.org and I got the GM part number.

I went to www.acdelco.com and I did a competitive cross reference. The AC Delco partnumber is D552.

You can go to AC Delco.com and list all the cars that used D552.

I will condense the list and post it here.

Eric.... I see motors in the yard all the time with coil packs that are visually identical..... appear to be magnivox.....does this mean the module will also work?

The module should be the same. Basically if it is a 3.8 SFI than its the same. Series 1 and Series 2 3800 are different. An easy way to tell is to look for the round V-6 emblem on the plenum. Only the non-series 1&2 motor used them.

Are you saying that even the series 1 and 2 have visually identical coilpacks (integral... 1 coilpack for all 6 cylinders)..... but the modules are different?

.... And that the SFI 3.8's with the round emblem will have coilpack/modules that will interchange....

Is this correct?

Sorry for playing dumb....

Bump! Old Thread!!!!

I am as confused as ever after my trip to the u-pullit yesterday.

I went to rockauto. I pulled up an '87 Vin 7 turbo regal module..... found the AC Delco brand... then clicked on the ac delco part no. It pops up a list of what other cars the module will interchange with. I then did the coilpack. I took this list, then went to the u-pullit website and did an inventory search. I found about 6-8 potential donor cars that "should" have the correct coilpack and module as a unit. I made a note of make/model/year car along with what "row" the car was supposed to be on. I brought along a 12V car battery and a caspers tester to test the coilpack/module combo on the car. I completely struck out. On the 2nd car I got to on my list, it looked correct.....type 1 coilpack..... pulled the connector off on the module.... tried the caspers connector..... it wouldn't fit..... hmm..... this isn't starting out too good. The ribs on the connector were different.... not allowing the connector to plug in. Then I noticed down on the balancer.....that it had the 2 sets of interupter rings..... similar to the fast start cars...... hmm...... type 1 coilpack and fast start?

I later found one of the old 86 or so FWD 3800 with the round medallion in the top of the doghouse...... it had a module that my tester fit, however... it had a type II coilpack.

At the end of this outing..... I was really confused. Today after thinking about it.... The last car mentioned above probably put a type II coilpack and module on it at some point just like I currently am running on my GN. I don't think it actually came with it.

One thing I see on the donor car list "stickied" at the top of the page is that it does give engine code vin breakdowns for each year car...... maybe some of the cars I was looking at in the yard had the right year cars....right make/models.... but maybe the engine was a different vin code?

I thought for sure I was going to find at least 2 useable coilpack/module combos on my hunt yesterday.

Blazer406- The info posted in the sticky- is info I (as well as others) have gathered over the years and the related info from which it came is usually posted with it... whether it is 100 percent without error, I can't say... so use the info as a guide line- but generally the people that posted the info, I feel were reliable sources- turbofish38, comes to mind ;)

For whomever reads this in the future, don't go through the hassle at the junkyard, I tried and tried to find the right stuff and it is a PITA. Whether it be the wrong "ribs" on the module or the coilpack ohms out incorrectly...yeah, just buy used stuff off of here or buy the chinese stuff new!
