I've lost engine braking in all gears. Had it last week but now its gone. Any ideas? Searched the posts but didn't see a remedy.

There is a one-way mechanical roller clutch in the transmission that allows the drivetrain to overrun the engine rpm when decelerating.

When the shifter is placed in drive, second & low, the Overrun Clutches are applied. This effectively locks the mechanical roller so that it cannot overrun, causing the engine compression to decelerate the vehicle.

That being the case, your Overrun clutches may have expired. There are only two and they are relatively small in diameter as well. If you use them a lot, they may have worn.

Some additional background information would be really helpful; i.e. how many miles are on your trans, is it still stock or modified, etc.

Unfortunately, I don't have a whole lot of history on the tranny. It is a rebuilt model (in it when I bought the car) and from the little bit I know it has around 40K miles.

If....

The weld on OR clutch housing broke this would be exactly the case. EXACTLY. and very common. My money is there. Or the only one time I ever saw this the ck ball in plate mushroomed feed hole and lodged in plate. But I would still bet on weld broke on clutch housing.

I can't really get to it anytime soon. I'll report back on the board when I do and let you know. Thanks for the help.
