was from the oe filter . they didnt last long .. and take the cap off

should i be able get a tiny filter like that at any auto parts store? I didn't have a chance to make it out until now. I went by a place i thought was 24hrs but they closed at 10pm.

i did check the vacuum. it's reading a solid 17-18in.hg. would it be safe to say i can rule out a vac leak?

Downpipe puck sticking?

You could check the downpipe puck, it may be sticking. Also, check alignment with turbo exhaust housing to ensure puck covers the hole if you've replaced the turbo. RJC sells a replacement puck in several larger sizes with a new sleeve bushing for the downpipe flange if this is the case. Good luck, John.

thanks john. when you say the downpipe puck, do you mean that gasket ring that goes between the downpipe and the turbo? it was in pretty good shape and i made sure everything lined up properly before we tightened those springy bolts down.

clusolynn is referring to....

the round disc that closes over the waste-gate by-pass hole on the w/g housing, that the actuator opens and closes. That disc/door is called the puck.

haha, gotcha. Thats what i get for just teaching myself these things over the years. i named that the "wastegate door/flapper thing" in my mind. I'll start calling it the puck.

but that was one of the first things i checked. it moves very freely when detached from the actuator.

If you can

Post a video of the car runnig with close ups of both sides of the engine . It just seems like bad vacume routing..

YouTube - ‪gn‬‏

please excuse the crappy quality, i used a phone camera. let me know if that is what you are looking for.

you can see that i made a vent piece similar to the one you showed me.

i revved the motor a little in that video but you sure can't tell at all. i don't have the transfer cable for my other camera or i would have gotten better video.

if the boost solenoid has gone bad, could that be the problem? and how would i make that determination?

when the car was running good you could torque brake and spool the turbo up nicely before launching. now your lucky if you can get it to spool to 2psi with your foot on the brake and the gas pedal mashed to the floor.

OK, i have a very basic turbo question. forgive me, my forced induction knowledge is limited to superchargers.

Is the wastegate fully closed at idle and when the engine is turned off?

if you still have the "Y" fitting in the wastegate vacuum tubing make sure the restricter orrifice is hooked up to the stock tube. One easy way to check for a vacuum problem is to unhook the line from the waste gate and hit the gas. If it boosts LET OFF THE GAS. If you don't you'll blow the motor. You also know your vacuum routing is AFU. If it doesn't boost you have another problem.

Yes, really basic explanation... The wastegate should be closed at all times until the target psi is reached then it opens

that's what i thought. i'm pretty sure this wastegate is about half open right now.

Could the rattle possibly be your torque conv.? Had this happen to me once when the car would shift it would pull the boost down and take a while to build back up couldn't figure it out and it ended up being a bad convertor.

I have another wastegate question. The wastegate that is on there is "Heavy Duty" and we think that means it is good for 18-30psi. IF adjustable, how do you adjust it? is the adjustment made in altering the length of the rod that connects to the actual wastegate?

AND, if that is how you adjust it, should I not just shorten the rod until the wastegate is completely closed when the engine is not running?

The rod should have light tension holding it closed with the engine off. You can either shorten the rod further to raise boost or use some kind of boost controller to raise boost. Also, be sure your boost gauge is working and accurate and watch for knock.

Perfect. That is a great help. You guys have been awesome. Tonight after work we are going to adjust the rod to close the wastegate and then go for a drive.

At this point i feel like the wastegate adjustment is the only loose end

closing the wastegate did the trick. it peaks and holds at 18psi now. now the question is. how much boost will the stock internals handle?

Good

your going in the right direction. If taken my stock parts up to 25psi without issue .you need a scanmaster .if you have one keep bumping up your boost untill you get knock .turn it back a little and lock it down. You should be safe there .
