When i start my car the volt meter reads about 10.2 and about 15-20 min later it will jump up to 13+ volts. But today it died on my and would not crank again, but after i jumped started it and ran fine and said 13 volts again. this as just started happing when it started getting cold. what could it be. i have a brand new battery

dead battery

Hi,
Sounds like the regulator in the alternator is acting wierd. You can replace the whole unit, or, if you are into it, pull the alternator apart and replace the regulator. you will spend $100+ for one, and $15 for the cheap fix. Sweat equity saves money. Your call. Good luck!

I know this sounds too simple, but clean the battery cables & battery itself while you're at it.

bad cable contact=poor battery charge

yes, and dont' forget to push on your instrument cluster and make sure the volt light comes on when key on, engine off. If it doesn't, the battery will not charge.

i bought one of the turbobuicks 200amp rebuild kit a while ago, great rebuild kit and I reccommend it!

that was it. the damm light bulb was loose. after a free new altneator. all i had to do was push on the instrument cluster

Sorry to jump in hear and hijack but since we are on the subject of regulators my car has been acting wierd lately. About half a year ago my volt light came on and so I had the alternator checked and it was bad so I got a new one. Lately I noticed at night when I stop say at a light for a bit with the heater going the lights dim just a tad and the heater blower motor slows a bit as well. When I start to drive again the lights come back up and the blower motor speeds up. My volt light always comes on when I turn the key to start and my car never seems to be low on juice to start. Does this sound like a regulator going bad?

I would change the alternator or regulator.Mine basicslly started doing the same thing as yours, then progressed to the volt light coming on over 2500 rpms.
Changed the alternator,problem went away.
At first,my volt light bulb had a bad contact too,as it did not light up when you put the key on.

yea, push it in till it comes on and tighten your cluster. glad i could help :)

Use this item on your engine, and you won't ever have an "Idiot Light" related problem again.

The wiring is getting old on our cars, and a perfect connection to the idiot light is essential to proper charging of the battery. This harness sidesteps the idiot light requirement and keeps the alternator working properly.

Since my age hit 55 years, I have low voltage in the morning too. Does Casper's make a kit to fix that? ;)

Hi John,
Where do the three plugs go? Alternator, wastegate solenoid and ?

Chrisgarrett,

John can reply with more insight, but the field fix goes inline of both the wastegate solenoid and the alternator field wire.

There is a male end that goes into the alternator, then the female end connects to the original field wire so the light circuit still works. Then the wastegate side does the same but for the wastegate solenoid wires.

HTH....

Yep ! and it works very well....I drove around for a few days with no instrument cluster with the Caspers adapter..Kept battery charged up! Easy plug and play install ! Well worth it IMO..

2 plugs between the wastegate connection
2 plugs between the alternator connection
