Can anybody tell me the life expectancy of a rebuilt turbo 700 out of an 87 4by4 blazer behind a 450 horse chevy?
Does it bolt up? Will it fit under a corvette ? Should I sell the 700 and buy a 400? The car has 390's so overdrive would be nice. This car will be beaten. every time it moves!
Kevin

If you don't have the 700-R4 built up it's gonna blow up like a hand grenade. The 200/700 Trannies weren't built from the factory to handle that type of power.

That being said it can easily be built to handle it. It should bolt up to a 454 LS6. I assume you're talking about the 1970 LS6 block, not the more recent one. I don't think that it will bolt up to the LS1 generation LS6.

I would have the 700 built up and forego the 400, but that's just me. It's going to be cheaper to have a TH400 built to handle that then it would to have a 700 built. It's all about your pocket book.

Sorry I don't know if it'll fit in a Vette or not, especially because you didn't say what year. However the 70 Vette was able to be ordered with the LS6 so it'll fit in that generation. Also I don't believe the 700 is that much longer than the 400 so you should be able to do it.

I'd be cheaper to use a 400, depending on the price you get it for. the AWD/4WD 700s are a whole different beast then the RWD ones, so even as a core it's not useful. Sell it and the T-case off, you'd probably be able to get a RWD core plus come ahead enough to get a portion of the parts. You're talking about throwing some hard parts into the 700 to get it to live (probably a sun shell, billet servo, shift kit etc.) You'll need to have your driveshaft length changed, I think there's a coupla inches length difference. The crossmember will also have to be moved, but I couldn't tell you the length for the 700. If it's a standard RWD chevy engine, it'll bolt up just fine. Don't forget a nice bigass cooler regardless of choice. I believe you'll also need a new TV cable as well for the 700R4. A few bills worth of hard parts and being properly assembled 450 horse shouldn't be an issue for it.

Thanks for the replys. I should give a little more detail.
The car is a 77 corvette with a crate motor bought from Dobles chevy in 1987. this car ran high elevens way back when. I bought it a few months ago and have known the car its whole life. Right now it has a turbo 350 in it which is junk. ( slipping).
I have a 700 out of an 87 blazer that has 5000 miles since rebuild. I would at least need a converter and shift kit as well as mods to fit it in?????
Thanks
Kevin

If the Blazer was equipped with a 2.8L, the transmission will have the small bellhousing pattern and will not bolt up to the Chevy V8. It'll also have the smaller, 27-spline input shaft.

If the transmission was for a 4.3L, it will bolt to the V8.

raptor has a trans that should do fine. I have one in my gmc truck ( lifted 35's built 350) lots of beating on the trails and pulling cars across 3 states excetra for 40+k and no problems yet still shifts nice and firm.

Oh and before this one I blew 1 stock original,1 rebuilt and 1 ati trans ( they were all junk in comparison):D

The trans would have to be completely disassembled and have a different output shaft and tailhousing put on it in order to use it as 2wd (unless you're making a 4X4 vette :D.) Also as stated earlier it would take lots o' cash to make it live and if it's a 2.8 bellhousing forget about it. Hope this helps.

It depends on a lot of things IMO but most importantly is will the car get beat on with slicks or just street radials? If you use slicks then a 700 will prolly last about .00002 seconds. Street radial will just go up in smoke so the trans may last a little longer.

The trans you have prolly wont last that long no matter what unless its a late 87 with the aux valve body. Mid 87 and earlier units are avoided by builders like the plague since they need lquite a few internal upgrades (extra $$) to be as reliable as a stock late 87 up units.

As was mentioned the trans will need disassembled to change the output shaft as the 4x4 shaft is shorter than the 2wd shaft. Theres no way around that.

The rear transfer case to trans adaptor will have to be swapped with a RWD tail housing but thats not a big deal. Four bolts and it falls off in your hand.

The 2.8 v6 trans is a paper weight so dont even bother with it not to mention it wont bolt up to the block anyways.

Ive bought some parts off of the ppl who build the "Raptor" trans and they are fairly knowledgable and could prolly put a 700 togeather that would live ok with a big block and radials and possibly a season with slicks. Just keep in mind that once you get to a point of big hp/lots of traction the physical size of the internal parts of the 700 just wont live season after season of abuse. Trans freshenings become a yearly, biyearly, or even monthly chore which most ppl wont put up with for very long if at all.

Got It

Thanks for all the reply's. I forgot about the trasfercase bolted to it! . I will sell em and probly go with a 400. Luckily the car came with a second differential at 336 ratio. Strange before it sat for ten years it only gained 2 tenths with the 390's
I just drove home from work on 26 lbs of boost , makes me wonder why I wanted this car to begin with!
 Kevin
