I may not be much help here but.....

I seem to remember someone saying, years ago, that if you're using a variable timing light you must half the number indicated on the dial in order to match it to the degrees of timing indicated on the balancer.

This is just a fuzzy memory so I can't be sure.
 
I think that only applies to a waste spark system.
 
I know thats the way it was on the gen 6 systems, but not sure on the fast system now. Maybe Cal or Otto can chime in here.
 
This is true with any engine management system. Since waste spark fires twice per combustion cycle, conventional timing lights think the RPM is twice as fast as it is. Using the dial feature on a timing light causes an error of twice the amount of advance dialed in to the light. If you leave the dial at zero, it will be OK.
 
So with the light at zero it still is going to show double the actual timing?
