Repair kit

turbobuicks.com in this forum you can find one repair kit to convert to
200amps you dont need to use ls or lt1

I just insatlled a 1996 Impala SS 140 amp alternator from NAPA. $113.

The only difference is the back lower bolt hole is in the middle of the alternator on the new one.:frown: You can fabricate something to fit or just leave it alone. It seems very secure since it is bolted to the tensioner and top A/C bracket. I didnt have any issues installing it without the back bolt.

I also put a 4 guage wire/cable from the alt-to-battery. I went from 13.0 volts at idle to 14.3.:)

I put one on my '86-'87 configured engine. I believe it is a 140A. The back half of the case had to be reclocked one way or the other to make it match the hole layout on the back of the original alternator. Additionally, it has a fatter case that I had to "dimple" in one area with a grinding tip to make a small amount of clearance for the accessory bracket. Could have slightly notched the assessory bracket but I decided to sacrifice the alternator. That took all of five minutes. Once done that dimpled area was installed oriented to the bottom and is not seen. It fits the engine with all of the original support brackets on the back and with no other problems.

I put a 4ga charge lead in addition to the stock charge lead on my car's stock alt. Went from 13.8 to 14.0. This could also be a sign of the age of the alt...if it is indeed designed to charge at 13.8. I may also need to check it with a different multi-meter.

Alternator

With this kit you use stock alt and rotor in fact this kit have new ballbearing

the charge voltage of the alternator is determined by several factors some of which are alternator temperature, battery state of charge, engine speed etc.---------the set point of the CS series alternator used in the GN was not a fixed single point value----------changing the alt/batt wire size would make almost zero change unless there was a lot of current flowing---------and for each test it would have to be identical conditions to make a valid comparison-------and thats not a normal situation especially when the car is idling....................RC

I am experiencing low voltage at idle..Anywhere from 12.0 - 13.8...
i am looking at two options...140 amp replacement or 200 amp retro kit..Any pros or cons to the 200 amp kit/install..I am aware that it is more amperage than will ever be needed, but rather be safe than sorry... My current alternator housing was powder coated...Thats why I am leaning towards the kit..Thanks,Todd

I got an lt1 alternator today from a friend to try out. If all goes well, i'll get a new one from gm. I'm tired of the rebuilt crap from the part stores. thanks guys.
