Hey all, i took my carpet out with thoughts of buying new since it was faded but after researching prices i decided to keep mine. With that being said, i seached our great forum for tips and here is what i did:

1. Sprayed thw entire carpet with water hose and clothes washing detergent.

2. Used a brush and scrubbed out all the dirt and there was a lot!

3. Rinsed it out and hung on a ladder to dry out.

It smells clean but it was still faded in certain areas. I bought some black Rit Dye and a small 8 oz spray bottle. I filled it with about 6 oz of hot water and then about 3 oz of dye. I shooked it up real good and began to spray. it went on like i was painting and at first i was going over just the faded areas but decided to go over the entire carpet. i had to make another bottle because i ran out with the first one. I covered the entire carpet and managed to get some on the driveway too

I didnt have my camera so i wasnt able to take before pics but if you can picture the pass front area was grayish color faded from the sun.

It looks great!! i will have pics up when i get my camera back.

My only concern is I am not sure how well it will *stick* later on down the line.

Should i do a final rinse or leave it alone?

i would hate to get black dye on my clothes when i work on the interior with the carpet installed.

thats my story for today, feedback would be greatly appreaciated.

sal, not really sure what to tell you except that I did the same thing to my 68 firebird years ago. I did not wash it and after it dried if you put your knees on it you would have black knees lol. I think someone told me I should have washed it back off with a vineger mix to set the dye. Maybe you can find something on the net. Sorry I couldn't be more help but if I find out I will let you know. This would be handy for a lot of the guys on here that are tight on money for sure. A carpet set is only about 150 bucks but if your tight for money like I am right now thats a lot to spend lol. Daniel

Daniel, thanks man! This is what i did: The day after i hit it with the dye, i rinsed it off and a lot of the dye came off. Its still more black than before and you can see where it was faded but not as much anymore. I will throw some water on it and see if it bleeds off since its not in the GN yet. I have seen that carpet for 150 bucks but its nothing like the OEM stuff, i.e. no rubber backing. Depends on how this one turns out and if not to my liking i may buy the 150 carpet and install on top of the oem, just a thought...

Thanks again for your reply!
