I noticed on the direct-scan that if I leave the key on with the engine not running my MAF number is 5 or 6. If I hit the gas pedal to the floor it will max out at 255. With no air going thru the motor I expected to see no change. I suddenly am getting an error code 34 about 10 seconds after starting the car. Am I seeing a normal reaction?

Sounds like a dead MAF.

When the MAF's output goes out of range, the ecm defaults to a set of MAF readings so the car will at least be drivible.

I'd suggest going thru the diagnostics of the code 34, just to be absolutely sure.

If it is dead, might as well get a Translator Plus, and convert to a newer style MAF.
