i have been wondering about this and i figured i'd ask and see if you guys had some opinions on this.......

I read that Maf reading at idle are supposed to be 5-6 gps
well on my car my maf readings at idle are 7 sometimes 8

i run the basic translator with a new lt1 Maf 3 inch

now i was wondering, is there anyway you can tune your car to lower your maf counts? or is this a ecm or chip, controlled device

I hear Low Blm's can be caused by a Maf , that reads higher then 5-6 at idle

can this be adjusted by playing with the IAC?

i curently have blm's at around 105 at idle. which means i am rich

my tps is set at .44
and the Iac is set at 21 warmed up in gear
i idle at around 750 rpms

is there any way to adjust this? or is it controlled by the chip?
values are the same with my thrasher 93 and JC 93 street chips.

im just trying to understand this, any info is appreciated :D

Open up the Translator box and make sure it is set for the 3" sensor. If it is, then set it for 3" 10% lean. That will bring the airflow number down a hair. I don't know if it will be enough in your case. Sometimes if you take screens out, it will help lower the number also.

Eric

MAF readings at idle should be between 4-7.
Arent there 2 or 3 dip switches on the translator? I believe they have something to do with rich/lean settings at idle/WOT.
What is your FP set at?

well actually
i have the basic translator.

i dont have the translator plus with the outside dip switches

any ideas?

can u open it up and see if it has some switches inside? or does it have some?

i am using the 89 turbo TA regulator untill i can afford another adjustable regulator
so its like 43 line off, which i know is rich, but even with the adjustable , the blm's were always 105-115 cruising

43psi static (line off) shouldnt be too rich. All depends on how the chip is burned really, but most chips are burned with 43psi static in mind. JL I know usually suggests 43psi. All of your #s you mentioned looked fine except for the BLMs, and I guess the MAF #s are at the edge of what would be considered acceptable. Its possible if you had an adjustable regulator that you could up those BLM #s by lowering the FP. However, that would probably only be masking your problem and creating a new one when you go lean on the topend/WOT.

I could have sworn the regular translators had some type of adjustment. Nothing near that of what you can do with a trans+. My brother has one on his T-LTD, I'll ask him tommorow.
You may already be on track suspecting the MAF, but I was wondering what condition are your injectors? My brother had a stock 84 before that ran extremely rich. Gas eventually started coming out the tail pipe. It finally stopped running altogether. Problem was injectors stuck open.
Did this condition your experiencing with your BLMs just occur after installing the trans/LT1 MAF?

Neither the Trans nor the Trans+ have outside switches, you have to take the cover off, the switches are inside.

The Trans+ only adds timing adjustment over the regular Trans.

Get a philips screwdriver and take the cover off the Translator box. There are switches inside. Make sure it is set up for your 3" sensor. If it is already set for the 3" sensor base setting, then change it to the 3" 10% lean setting. That will help change your BLM's.:)

Eric

welp i have new injectors on the car and the correct chips for the 36# ers.
i was totally unaware that the basic translator had adjustable switches on the inside, i thought that came with the +plus version.

now i am gunna hafta go inspect it afterwork today.
i hope it leads to something, cuz my gas mileage sucks and for $1.74 a gallon its eatin a hole in my wallet.

thanx for the input, ill definately post when i do some investigating later tonight :)

yeah,if you didn't set the dip switches(inside the box)for the 3" lt1 sensor she'll run a little funny:).

in my experience, the hotairs need less fuel overall than 87's,so you'll probably need to play with the fuel settings in the trans+ like eric said.

later,sean

doooooooooooooooh
i didnt even think to set the 2 Maf switches
the Dips were correct but the 2 other switches were not set for anything

i set it to 10% lean and the blms went up quite a bit
around never lower then 115 usually
which is better then when it would drop to 90 all the time

my car ran alot better, i noticed at like around 50 mph the car would sort of stumble at an even cruise,
it felt allmost like a miss, and i was chasing a miss in the car for the 5 months i had the translator.

with setting the 2 switches it cured all those problems up

i didnt even think to think the basic translator had adjustments

i assumed just the +plus version did
probally woudl help if it came with instructions ehh? lol

my maf readings are at a steady 7, so i shall just live with it, cuz it not havin any problems for once

thanx felllas ;)

XXNinja, did you mount the translator box anywhere?

I need to do this mod and thought I'd just set it by the washer bottle. I'd like to know what spot all of you have picked. TIA
