I am going to upgrade the electronics in my red Turbo T. I'm going to get the Motrons 60lb injectors, the Translator, Extender chip and a more modern Maf. My question is; should I get the 3.5 ls1 MAF or the 3 inch Impalla maf. Right now my maf pipe and couplers are stock size. Would they both work equally as well?

I would go with the 3 1/2 in MAF on an 87. I run the 3 inch impala MAF only because I have a Hot Air. My 2 cents. Good luck-Brad

The 3" works great. New, I think you can buy a 3.5" for less, but couplers might make it a wash.

So there's really no advantage to bigger intake/MAF pipes then?

An LT1 MAF won't slow down a 10 second car vs. an LS1 sensor a noticeable amount and both outflow a stock MAF, unless the stocker has had the screens and venturi removed (and a regular chip won't work for this setup)

size

The stock maf measures 3.25 inches. I wonder if my Turbonetics couplers would stretch over the 3.5 maf?

The stock maf should measure 3" because my 3" LT1 maf fits in the maf pipe and hoses the same.

i changed to a 3.5 maf and still had my 3 inch pipe i just went to a plumbing store and bought the 4 inch coupler(the black plumbing coupler) then i slid my stock size couupler back on the pipe and then put the 4 inch on the stock size coupler to make up the difference. the 4 inch was a little tight if i remember right on the 3.5 maf . just take the maf with you and find the size that fits tight then youll have a cheap fix.hope this is clear enough lol

coupler

I measured the stock maf, with a caliper. It measures 3.25 OD. I know I can stretch my couplers to 3.4inches. Has anyone taken a caliber to the 3.5 LS1 maf and looked at the outer dimensions of it?
I will probably choose the 3 inch LT1 maf anyways, since the TA-49 inlet bell would be the restrictive link in the chain. I don't think there's any reason to go out and buy all new couplers and a 3.5 maf pipe, when the inlet bell is smaller?

does the ls1 read higher than the lt1? is the ls1 any more precise than the lt1 being that its new technology ? if you answered yes to any of those questions then go ls1 if not then rock on either way.jmho
