how do you put in main bearings? do they just "slide in"? does the engine HAVE to be out to do this? how difficult is this procedure to do?

If you've never done it before, I personally think it would be easier if you had the motor out of the car. I think you can change the main bearings with the motor IN the car. Yes, they slide in around the crank. However, if you main bearings are bad then you might need some work on the crank. I'm pretty sure you'd have to pull the motor to remove the crank as it probably won't clear the crossmember if you tried to pull it. I just pulled my motor when I had to look at my bottom end.

If you don't get GM Hightech Performance, go to their Web site and take a look at the 3 part series they did on building up a Buick 3.8 motor. There's some good info there...

Good luck,

I changed out the main and rod bearings in my "T" last winter.
Not a big deal.
I did it in my garage. Hardest part is getting the pan on and off.
My motor had a mix of std and .001 bearing in it. All stamped GM.
Guess it wasn't machined too well from the get go.
One other thing...went from 10 psi at idle to 22-25 psi at idle.
:D
