Main reason for soft 1-2 shifts?

What is the main reason for a soft 1-2 shift? The 2-3 shift is firm. If the t.v. cable was out of adjustment wouldn't it affect all shifts? This is on my 87' GN. My 86' T-Type shifts extremely well but it also has a newer transmission. I was thinking of switching The two. The T-type is a column shift and was wondering if there would be a problem with the switch. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks, R.B.

1-2 servo valve

You can get a new servo valve rebuild kit for about 20 bux from the gm dealer. It has the rubber o-rings and seals in it to get the line pressure where it belongs. Cheap and easy fix, your seals are just worn. Hope this helps. I will check, i might still have the part # for the kit.

Servo seals leaking.
1-2 accumulator problems.

How hard is it to replace the servo valve? Can I do it myself? Does the transmission have to come out? How long should it take to do the job? Thanks, R.B.

Yes, slight acceleration and the 1-2 shift is perfect. The more acceleration the worse it gets. BTW Chris, I sent an e-mail to your site. Thanks, R.B.

I also noticed today that it won't go into od unless I let off the throttle slightly. Is this problem and the soft 1-2 shifts related to the same thing or have I got two separate issues going on here? This all started after an engine rebuild. TV cable has been adjusted properly. Thanks, R.B.

hydraulic characteristics are not proper in relation to power ouput.loss of accumulator pressure at wide open throttle throttle.is the fluid color still transparent?

Transmission fluid looks almost too good. Can't hardly tell where it is on the stick because it's so transparent. R.B.

After posting that last post it made me wonder about something. When I got the car back from having the motor rebuilt I noticed it not shifting properly. Checked the tranny fluid a couple of days later and noticed it was almost two quarts low. Put in two quarts of Dextron 111. Shifted a little better but still not right. It took over three months to get the car back from the rebuild so it sat outside for those three months with the motor out. What I don't understand is why, after adding two quarts of tranny fluid, it has no tint of red on the stick when checking it??? Almost clear!

OK, I can see the red tint now. It was at night when I checked it so couldn't see it very well. Must be getting old. Would a pressure test tell me what's going on with the tranny? It shifts great under normal acceleration. But the harder I accelerate the worse the 1-2 shift becomes. Could it really be just the seals in the servo? Thanks, R.B.
