Ohhhh Man! What a suprise, I though for sure she would be getting off. I guess the justice system is doing their jobs, finally.

Just think, her trial (federal court) cost each taxpayer $10. Last I saw they say the level of the crime and the formula for sentencing goes to about 0 months to about 36 months. Most likely no jail time, just home imprisonment. Nice coup for the political careers of the prosicutors. What she did was wrong and has been found guilty. Kind of dumb for $200k.

Martha got what she deserves. I can only wonder what he sentence will be. Probably a slap on the wrist and a small fine. One can only hope. God knows there are enough corporate criminals out there it's nice to see one get caught!

I think Stewart's potential punishment is out of proportion to her actual crime.
She did NOT steal from the company she runs.
What she got prosecuted for was "insider trading", ie buying/selling another companies stock on the basis of non-public tips, from the other company's CEO, Sam Waksal (who has always had a history of barely-legal slippery dealings, and is now in jail)
The usual punishment for these "lower-level" trading crimes is give back your ill-gotten gains & pay $ penalties, which can be significant.
She didn't MAKE money by the trading, but AVERTED losses because she knew in advance the stock would likely drop. The amount "saved" was in the $100K range, a large sum, but not in league with the "real" corprorate crooks of the last few years.
The real, big time crooks of the last few years include :
Fastow, Lay, and Skilling of Enron-- bankrupted the company while they stole 10s or 100s of millions. Fastow is heading for 10 yrs in jail, Skilling is the arrogant chief exective SOB who should be locked up for 20 years.
Kozlowski (?) of Tyco - stole 100s of millions.
Rigas family of Adelphia cable -- ran the company like a private piggy bank, stole stole 100s of millions.
Ebbers of Worldcom - biggest accounting fraud in history, BILLIONs of $.
Hinnick of bankrupt Global Crossing - 100s of million of accounting fraud, so far he he remains free and in control of many millions $$. I don't know why he's been able to dodge the bullet thus far. He may have been more clever concealing his fingerprints.
One thing these guys have in common is they RARELY if ever leave a paper trail (memos, emails, etc). They threaten and bully others to do the dirty work, and then plausibly try to claim "I knew nothing".
These are the guys who should be crucified, not Stewart...

I heard the # for Ebbers is somewhere in the vacinity of $172 BILLION loss to investors. Martha's biggest issue was lying to the Feds and then trying to hide it. If she had clammed up and never said a word they couldn't say she lied.
I hadn't been following the Stewart case that closely, so I took the opportunity to carefully re-read some articles.
Contrary to my first reaction, it was NOT insider training she was convicted of ... rather, Obstruction of Justice etc , for trying to lie and coverup, as Pronto mentions.
One lawyer interviewed claimed, that had Stewart not tried a cover-up, the original evidence on insider trading was too flimsy to convict!
An odd situation... being convicted , for "covering up" an event that possibly wasn't illegal in the first place!
It was her attempt to manipulate the ensuing investigation that got her in trouble.
The total amount of money she tried to "save" by insider trading ... $60K. Yet she was worth many millions. A paltry sum to go to jail over...

For those of you who think people are smart because lots of money comes their way, the fact is, Martha is about a dumb bitch! 
her attempts to cover her tracks were evidently quite amateurish ... the Gov't apparently had little difficulty proving that part of it.
"Obstruction of justice" charges are mega-serious, frequently worse than the original allegations of wrong-doing.
she would likely NOT have been convicted, has she just sat tight, said nothing, and then let the Govt try to prove insider trading, as that case was weak.
