Finally got around to measuring up the valve springs I have that will go into the long block I'm "slowly" assembling. ;)

This is a new unused set of Kirban srpings I"ve have around for several years.

Measurements were taken using an Intercomp model VST20 (Thanks Richard!!!).

And thanks to my Son-In-Law John (GNX405) for taking the actual measurements.

First column is free standing height
Second column is # at 1.727"
Third column is # at 1.340"

Just about right for a flat tappet hydraulic. THey will sack about 8-10 lbs in short order, so they will be right at 100 lbs. on the seat after break-in. Good to go.

Thanks Ken! With those weights though I'll have to do a good cam break-in. I was successful with the engine that's in the car now. Started out with the same springs back then.

As an option,...

you could use the old springs for the break in and then swap in the new.

Dave,

I can't understand why you would you even mess with a flat tappet cam. They are so obsolete. I would throw that thing in the garbage.:biggrin:

I don't have the timing set yet. But a roller is WAY beyond what I want to spend.

This is the numbers matching block out of my 86 GN. I'll likely never get around to puting it in the car before I get rid of the car(I would just include the long block in the sale). So I'm not looking forward to spending in excess of $800 for a timing set I would likely never use.

What is the height of the retainer on the valve in the head with no spring.I ususally check with a vernier(special tools available)Then I put the retainer on the spring and put in the spring checker. Finally shim so all are the same, much more precise and not very time consumeing:biggrin:Good luck

Kevin
