I installed one of those magnetic oil plugs, when changing the oil on the car i noticed the plug had metal shavings around the tip.The motor has about 5k on it is this normal.

The only thing it should have on it would be very small metal powder like substance, not shavings or chips of any measurable size. You should send a sample of your oil to an oil testing facility and they can tell you what part the shavings are probably coming from.

Like Bob said should be very fine pasty metal filmlike thingies. Kind of fanned out around the metal magnet tip. No real chunks of metal, the stuff should squish flat like and oily film or silver neverseize when you touch it.

Nick's ideas is a good one too.

Very small debris is normal up to that mileage on the new motor.
Did you flush it out alot in low mileage increments?

I would recommend using the rare earth magnets on the filter that kirban sells for $25. While definitely taking Nicks advise and seeing what the filter has to say.

Hope its nothing more than normal breaking in for ya.
