Can anyone tell me what are Metallicas best hits?
I would say "one" is the best, but I don't know what else is comparable. I also have the cd with unforgiven, nothing else matters, etc. I'm not talking about the newer 90s stuff, but the older songs that I missed the boat on, since I didn't listen to them back then. Thanks

sounds like you have the Mettalica Black Album (Enter Sandman is an AWSOME song)

Load was an OK CD, and i was not a fan of RE-LOAD

I would also like to know the older songs..... good post

Harvester of Sorrow, Ride the Lightning, Fight Fire with Fire, Trapped under Ice, Creeping Death, Basicly the whole Ride the Lightning album. Master of Puppets is another good album, you are better off buying both of them, seeing almost every song is good. Personally I think their first album is sloppy and the songs themself arent that good. My opinion of the band themselves.. Lar's the drummer is about as bad as Ringo Star, same goes for Jason Newstead, the bassest. If you really want to listin to the best musicians, listen to The Who, Pete Townshend, the guitarest is fairly decent, but a brilliant songwriter. John Entwistle (rip) the bassest IS the best rock bassest ever hands down, and has influenced many newer bassests. The drummer Keith Moon is also the best rock drummer EVER, makes people like Bonham and Copeland look like their going backwards. As for Daltry..eh, an OK singer. If you wish to listen to some of thier stuff do not listen to the crap album Whos Next, listen to the old stuff before Keith was all druged out and hardly able to play. Excellent songs by them to download are, Young man Blues, Cobwebs and Strange, The Real Me, The Punk and the Godfather, 5:15 (both live and studio) Now i'm a Farmer, Pure and Easy, Heaven & Hell, Fortune Teller, A Quick one While he's away, Shakin' all over, Dont even know myself, Those are good starter songs:cool: If you DL any, I urge you to get Young man blues, look for the Live at leeds version or Isle of Wight. :)

Metallica rocks harder than any of those bands you mentioned, they are in a different category altogether. I highly doubt anyone thinks of "The Who" when thinking about bands that rock like metallica. Thats like comparing a mercedes and a GN. 2 totally different things. The mercedes is refined, comfortable and luxurious. The GN is raw, unbridled, and mean. When you think heavy metal, you think Metallica, not Pete Townsend. And Lars is an awesome drummer, who could blow away almost any drummer.

I recommend the Garage days revisited album, it rocks, although it is an early recording, so its not perfect. Take it for what it is. Ride the Lightning, and Master of puppets, awesome. Songs like "For whom the bell tolls" and "Am I evil?" are just perfect for smokin' some fool in a mustang when out cruising the GN. The newer stuff sucks, and I miss the old Metallica. Saynig they are sloppy is like saying concrete is too hard. Duh! Metallica fans aren't looking for smooth, relaxing melodies. They want metal, and they want it loud.

yea, i would have to disagree about the crack on kill 'em all as well. i know pretty much everything there is to know about metallica, and the first album rocked pretty nice. the songs like "the four horsemen" and "metal militia" put them on the map when they were underground. i also love the forst track, "hit the lights". it was all fast thrash music and it gets your blood pumping. i do agree with lars and jason sucking. kirk hammett is probably the strongest musician in the group.

Another one of my favorites also from the Black Album is 'Wherever I May Roam'

first off, jason newsted isn't the bass player for metallica, hasn't been for over a year.

they got lucky and picked up the baddest bass player around,ex-suicidal tendencies/infectious grooves/ozzy/black label society/jerry cantrell bassist robert trujillo:D.the guy's a bad mo-fo,go listen to suicidal's "send me your money" or any infectious grooves.

i'd say the best song off kill em all is "whiplash".

as for ride the lightning, obviously "fade to black" and "for whom the bell tolls".

master of puppets is chock full of great songs."master of puppets","leper messiah","disposable heroes","damage, inc" the list goes on and on.

garage days is my favorite metallica album.i've always liked metallicas covers, they sound better than their studio stuff.they don't take themselves so seriously and kinda let it all hang out.check out other covers like "breadfan","stone cold crazy","whiskey in the jar" and "turn the page".good stuff:).

i'm not a big fan of ...and justice for all,too sterile and dry.good songs are "one" and "dyers eve".i could take or leave the rest.

everybody has the black album so no need to cover that:).i will say that "sad but true" is one of the best metallica songs ever.

Bands that rock like Metallica eh? When you put a group of bad musicians together you get noise, not music. It is quite obvious you know nothing about music, to say that The Who is 'smooth, relaxing melodys'.. You would'nt have bands like Metallica if it wasnt for the real poineers like Zepplin, Cream and THE WHO.
As I said before, download any of those songs I mentioned, and tell me who rocks harder. Maybe I'm wrong, but wasnt it The Who that had the loudest concerts ever? Or atleast at the time:cool: Sorry to hi-jack the thread..

P.S Lars = Phill Rudd:D

IMHO I think the bands who pioneered the way for hard rock, heavy metal, whatever you want to call it, aren't bands like The Who or Led Zeppelin. The main band was Black Sabbath, if it wasn't for them there wouldn't be any Pantera, or Megadeth, or Metallica, or other heavy bands like that. Zeppelin is more bluesy and inspired bands like The Black Crows or something. But that's just my opinion. After playing guitar for almost 15 years that's the conclusion I came to ;) .

But my favorite Metallica song is Orion, off Master of Puppets, others already mentioned are Seek and Destroy, Lepper Messiah. But also good songs are The Call of Ktulu, Whiplash, Sanitarium. I don't really follow them anymore past the Black Album.

Thanks.

Sandbagger, you might look into some hooked on phonics. I didn't say The Who was smooth and relaxing, did I? Read. I said Metallica fans aren't listening to Metallica for something smooth and relaxing, they want thrashing fast metal. The guy just asked for opinions on Metallica songs, not your opinion on music in general. Everyone likes something different. I'd personally rather slam my d!ck in a sliding glass door than listen to Pete Townsend, but thats me. As far as music knowledge, well I've been drumming for well over 10 years, and my stepfather who raised me has his own band, and he personally has sang back up on at least 3 other musicians albums, so while I might not be a musical genious, niether are you. My stepdad loves and plays jazz, blues, and some classic rock, and hates Metallica, but can appreciate what they do and realize that some people like them as much as you like Pete Townsend. I tend to agree with 87GP on the Black Sabbath thing, as Metallica did covers of bands like Motorhead, not Cream. Its a different category, as I said before. Like I said, you may think they are bad, but you can say it untill you're blue in the face, Metallica fans are still going to like Metallica. So quit with the bad musicians crap already, its just you're opinion, which you've made clear. On to more kick arse metallica songs!

Ride The Lightning! I like pre Newsted Metallica the best. Can't say I like anything newer than Justice. I really like Garage Days for the Misfits covers. Like that old school metal. Takes me back to my middle school bmx/skating days. When everyone seemed to be listening to Bon Jovi an MC Hammer, me and my friend were listening to Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Suicidal, and punk rock. We thought we were bad a$$es.:p

I think people like them for different reasons. I think Justice is the best(whole album) then Fade to Black, bell tolls, Sanitarium , master, breadfan, Creeping Death, ride are all must have. BLack and kill um all are farther down the list, the box of "binge and purge" is cool if you borrow it from a friend and never give it back:) "year and a life" dvd is a cool making of "Black" Also, anything live is good. I have their '94 woodstock version of "for whom the bell tolls" and is the best ever.

Touche.. :oThe only thing I criticized about Metallica is their bass playing and drums.. Having all of their albums up to The black album, and listining to them for a number of years I feel I have the right to critique them. I gave him my opinion on the songs I liked by them, and happened to drift off a little.. Im sorry to say, but if you have been playing the drums for 10 years and still think Lars is god your in for a rude awakening, or just totally oblivious to good drumming, perhaps you should listen to 'for whom the bell tolls' again and tell me if he does nothing more then keep time. Now that youve mentioned you and your familys music background Ill do mine. Father who has played the bass for 39 years, sister has played the bass for nearly 5 years, brother-in-law who also plays the bass, and for over 12 years. I know 2 drummers and both have the same opinion. As far as me, I play no instruments, as of yet, but when I have the time I will pick up the bass. And strive to play like Jaco:D Guitars do kick ass in Metallica though:)

Metallica is a good metal band and they should admit to this. Load and Re-Load were very poor in quality one good song per album and a bunch of filler crap. In fact even tyhe black album was pushing it. Best Metallica album by far was Master of Puppets.

And as far as the other bands mentioned. "The Who", "Cream", and "Led Zeppelin" Difrent music, very direrent but all of them are better then metallica. And if you dont think "The Who" can compare to Metallica find a bootleg video tape of them live and you will then think, man Metallica is lazt on stage compared to these guys. The Who in there prime were awsome.

WFO you bet me to it, fade to black and then am I evil are my favs. I remember when I was in high school they stopped playing fade to black on the radio because so many kids were killing themselfs.

I only like And Justice and back. My favorite album is Master of Puppets. Frayed ends of sanity is one of my favorite songs. When you started to here Metallica on the radio I knew it was over. Before the Black album how often did you hear Metallica on the radio. You may hear One, Fade to black, or For whom the bell tolls. But that was about it. You would have to stay up to watch Headbangers ball just to see them. All there new stuff is for radio air play. Their old music had meaning. That was the reason I liked them. I even wasted my money to see them on the Black tour. It was called " An evening with Metallica". It was one of the worst concerts I've seen.

I disagree w/ kirk being the best musician. Have you ever tried to play the stuff that James does?....and then sing on top of that? Its really stinkin hard to play his guitar parts alone. Although Kirk is freakin amazing w/ his solos.
Album-wise, for some reason I really like Load. I dunno why but i could listen to it over an over. Next would be Ride the Lightning, then Garage inc, disc1.

KIRK HAMMETT RULES (SEE NAME<-) As far as a best song i like all the stuff new and old. GARAGE INC. is an awesome cover cd, if you listen to them cover these songs the originals dont cut it. Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are there best 3 album (if i had to name one) but i can listen to em all cover to cover.
