Alot of these bands I haven't heard in alot of time. Guess I am going to dig out the old cassettes again. Pantera has always been a favorite of mine. You will normally find them or Rage Against the Machine in my Cd player at work.

he played the same thing over and over again. dont get me wrong, i really love maiden, all of it...well everything from the ****inson and di'anno eras. but most of the songs were the same chord progressions set in different keys. they were a really good band, but i dont feel that there music was that whacked. see pantera is a band that maintains good album sales and a very hardcore following, without any major media exposure. and they are absolute animals musicianship wise. theyre one of the craziest mainstream thrash bands, and theyre still huge.

I saw them in concert with the Scorpions in the early eighties... the guy NEVER SAT DOWN - was the most incredible rock drummer I've ever seen. The image is still burned in on my brain!

As for Rush's Neal Peart, watching the guy get lowered via crane into his drumkit (back when he they all had long hair...) was pretty cool to. Amazing technical percussionist.

Surprised nobody's brought up Randy Rhodes era Ozzy yet. Not metal in the Metallica sense, but a huge influence on that lead style. Rhodes wasn't 100 lbs soaking wet, and had these purple & yellow flying V guitars, but the riffs that guy layed down could make you see god, ifyaknowwhaddimean

Lived for Metallica till after Master of Puppets - when they released the first ballad it was all over.

Have to get back to my respectable middle class job now.

Agreed, and Iron Maiden can be compared to Metallica. Personally I feel that Maiden is much better than Metallica musically but both have some great music.

As for Metallica's best music, I like it all untill they started selling out with the And Justice album, after that it was all for the money and radio airplay. The Black album was pretty good though considering.

All of you that are on here proclaiming Lars sucks have very little clue what he is doing then.

Lars isnt the best player in the world, but after 17 years of drumming experience under me, I can tell you there are a lot of drummers that couldnt keep up with Lars if they tried. Lars has some crazy double-bass speed. When he plays double bass riffs he isnt even trying all that hard. Take your average other drummer, and they will pass out trying to play that stuff.
When he plays, its all about three words...power power and power! (check "Dyer's Eve" on ...and Justice for all!!!)
St Anger is a lot more technical than some of the past stuff, maybe thats why those of you who said they went downhill after Load dont like it. You guys want to bash the group for not being good, that the guys arent talented, then after Load, they get more technical, playing with odd times and more song changes, and then you bash them because they dont sound like Metallica anymore...whats up with that???
If they play loud and fast and powerful, they must suck as musicians. They start making changes to their music and experimenting, then you call them a sell-out.

Personally, I like Reload and St Anger. They are different. I like the older stuff too. Why not evolve musically?? You can only play boom chick boom boom chick so many times to sell the song anyway, right?........

BLACKENED, havent heard that song in years but can still remember to this day that song made my blood pump hard. I call LOAD and RELOAD, TARD and RETARD, cause they suck.

As far as Lars drumming, the guy is as technically good as a high school percussionist. He doesnt hold water to any of the new generation metal drummers out there now.

When I think of Speed Drumming i think of Joey from Slipknot, Vinnie from Pantera, Raymond Herrera from FF.
When I think of Technical Drumming i think of only one, Danny Carey from Tool, sometimes i think that guy has an extra arm

And Justice For All was their last really good album. Black is when they started becoming more mainstream and shorter songs. I enjoy the longer material gives you more time to rock out and really get into the music.

...and the list goes on. Granted, the radio versions (if they're ever even played) are significantly shorter, but don't blame the Band.

Anybody else go to Summer Sanitarium last year? I saw 'tallica twice last year, and will be there for their September gig here in Cleveland in September.

I've seen Rush (4x), Dream Theater (2x), Van Halen, Korn, Ozzy, Slayer, GNR, Bizket , Linkin Park, and everyone who's been anyone for the last 10 - 15 years. No one, and I mean NO ONE out there puts on a show like these guys.

You can p!ss and moan all day about who's the best bassist, or the best drummer, etc. As a whole, no one touches the Mighty Met.

Oh, and Hetfield is hands-down, no bullsh!t, the greatest Rock rhythm guitar player of all time. There just is no one else. Chr!st, even Zack Wylde admitted it...

If you like Metallica or if you don't, one has to acknowledge them as some of the grand daddy's of all things metal.

....And Justice For All is hands down their greatest achievement to date. As for their Re-Load album, I wouldn't pi$$ on it if it were on fire. St. Anger is a nice step back into the right direction, but I'm most excited about hearing Hammett get to do some of his trademark soloing again. Most guitarists of my age group learned to play on Metallica.....the first riff I ever learned was from 'To Live Is To Die'. As far as Hetfield's rhythm prowess is concerned.....whenever you are listening to Metallica, keep reminding yourself, that's ALL down-picking!

Anyone who is convinced that Lars is a great percussionist (which he is) needs to hear Fear Factory's drummer Raymond Herrera..... and you can tomorrow, the new album Archetype hits stores at midnight!!
