Know it is common to go from the military to the police department. Anyone hear done it? Online sites really have basic info on how to join and the basic requirements. Would like to know any benefits being retired military and joining the police department. Especially retiring from the PD.

A friend of mine went from being an Army Ranger to the PD. He was a supervisor a few years back and not sure what rank he is now. Haven't seen him in about 4 years.

Curious about a "second" retirement from a government job.

If you retire from the military you won't have to worry about losing that retirement check once you start a new job. If you go to work for the police, that would fall under state and I don't think federal service would apply. There are people collecting retirement from the military, in addition to disability from the VA, and who get government jobs. They collect all three checks.

The only way (I believe) that they lose their military retirement pay is if they try to get their "time" in the military to be added to their "time" in the new government position so that when they are eligible to retire from the government job the "time" is calculated for "pay purposes" as if they held the government job for number of years equal to their military time + the government job time.

I don't know about benefits, but I know military experience will give you extra points if the hiring system is based on a points system. You'd be hired over a person with no military experience if everything else was similar.

Get the best of both worlds. Be a DACP (Department of the Army Civilian Police). We call them "Blue Suiters". Your fed time counts and you get training that will count towards civilian law enforcement if you decide to go full civilian LEO. When I was at Ft. Hood, all the DACP's got to go to training at FLETC or Quantico. Also, since the regular MP's at most posts are deploying a lot, most of the permanent LE jobs on post are going to the blue suiters (K9, SRT, Investigations, Bike patrol, etc). I would look into that. See what they have at Schofield or Shafter. Might make a good transition.

I may get stuck on Maui. Very few jobs in my field. I have tons of options if I am able to stay on Oahu or move back to the Mainland. If I get stuck on Maui my choices are few and far between. This is why I was thinking of the PD. Just one of my options on a short list.

I may get stuck on Maui.

I'm sorry, I'm just having a hard time with the concept that "stuck on Maui" is bad :biggrin:. Course, I did get tired of the weather in Southern California after a few years, and was glad to move east.

Good luck whichever way you go.

I guess "stuck" is a bad choice of words. I may have to move back home to take care of personal business. Going on vacation to Maui may be great. But the job situation is not very good. I may be able to find work but not a great "career".

Forestry and Wildlife? It seems to be a good gig on the big island so maybe Maui is alright too. Or you can just sell spam musubi on the beach :D.
