I know, I know, it's not a Buick, but I'm working on my brothers 84 Monte Carlo SS and it's got a shaft style radio, I'm just wondering what what people are doing to put a CD reciever in a G body Monte Carlo.

Do turbo buicks have the shaft style radio too?

You have to goto your local parts store or electronics store and buy a installation kit,it has a new plastic frame that the radio slides into and then the frame bolts to where the factory radio was. It's also easier to get the wire adapter harness to plug into the orignal plug that went to the radio. That way your not having to cut the old one off the car harness.

I had an 84 SS and with the shaft style radio, you can't re-use the factory radio bezel without cutting it up. I ended up getting a trim plate from an 86-88 Monte SS that had the large opening to accommodate the later-style radio. Then as challengermike says you have to get an installation kit made for 86-88 monte. The wiring harness adapter for will also help.

or you can go to the junkyard and get a bezel. That's what I did with my 79 regal. If you take your time to cut the bezel, it will look great. Don't forget to run a constant to your aftermarket plug so your cd player keeps memory

Crutchfield doesn't list an installation kit. I guess it's going to be a universal kit and play it by ear. I may actually get a double DIN size for it. Is a double DIN what came from the factory on later model g body montes?

On another note if anybody knows, wheres a good place to buy seat covers for a Monte SS. I'm sort of excited to get this project rolling. For one, it gets it out of my garage, for two, it's going to have a T-56 (I've already got almost all the transmission swap finished) a 6 speed in a g-body will be cool

There is a car stereo
section on this board. Anyway the kits they sell are made for many make and models now. The one for the Buick will be big enough to allow you to put a regular size after market radio in the car. You just have to remove the two metal brackets on either side of the factory radio. Bolt it on to the new Din.
Yes you can go and buy a larger Din radio and it will work. Definitly get the wire harness adapter so your not chopping away on the harness.

Get a bezel from the junkyard and cut it. I'm telling ya it will look much better than a mount kit.
