In a nutshell.

I am trying to get the pads to stay in the calipers... but it is a no-go. Now I am talking only about the piston side. I have 1 of the retaining clips from the original pads, but using it just causes the pad to pop out of the piston.

I'd rather not "silly-cone" the pad to the piston... but I don't see too many other options.

What can you suggest?

I'll assume you are using the B-body spindles and calipers. If so, the pads will be retained by the caliper pins once you install the assembly on the spindle. Just use some anti-squeal compound on the lip of the piston to hold the pad in place while you install the caliper and pads onto the spindle. Once you install the pins, the pads are trapped. The clips are just to make pad installation easier.

But there still needs to be a clip that holds the inner pad to the piston. Otherwise it's going to be riding against the rotor, and will wear down to nothing in short order.
