ok i did some research and i cannot resolve why my tach/boost guage is maxed out.its the stock analog unit, also my car is an 84 with an 87 drive train, the tach is maxed out,the boost gauge moves like it is the tach...
i checked to make sure the fuel pump prime and tack connector wasnt pluged together.they werent.
i have an 87 ecm and installed it and no change..
i have two other clusters tried them and no change....

does all three clusters need "recalibration"?if so im an electronics tech, whats involved in recalibration?i read some chip(s) needs replacing?

could this be any other problems??(i know the inside harness wasnt changed because i traced back another problem(my fan relays werent getting +ign, found the firewall plug had an different pin arangement)

once again , thanks in advance for your knowledge... Gary

The stock boost and tach gauges are actually idiot lights which only get worse with time. I gave up early and put after market boost(get the dual one with vacuum), tach, knock and temp gauges as well as a scanmaster. If you want to stay with the stock setup contact Casper Electronics. They do sell remanufactured units. Just an idea. Brad

thanks brad,i will contact caspers,i will run aftermarket gauges,im obsesive compulsive and i want everything original in good working order too!! this particular car should keep me busy for the rest of my life

Mine's like that too, just by turning the key my car goes to 6,000 rpm's and about 8 psi.

My car must be sick fast!

Is Caspers selling those chips or servicing the clusters?

If they're being sold, how much $ and where do I find them?

Thanks

joelo's:
chips have to be "burned"with a lazer or a dimond cutter.

i just find it hard to believe all three of my clusters are bad

ok so the cheapest way is to go to an aftermarket boost and tach units right?

I'd really like to see those litle lights working right on my car as they used to, but I dont know if its worth the investment and I dont know either how much $$ are we talking about here.

Thanks a lot for the info

i think its $89 for the recalibration service,so its a good investment.i just want to make sure there is no other possibilities for my problem.im going to use "real " gauges too,but the original dash led's are eye candy to me

i read the article on how caspers recalibrates the unit, basically debris gets on chips after awhile and affects the chips output...im gonna experiment and see if i can gentlly clean off debris off both chips with electronics cleaner and see if this helps(what am i gonna do?mess up my gauges?)ill post the results....
