So, as of late I've been having a problem with MAJOR false knock. All I would have to do was blip the accelerator or quickly depress the pedal (like kicking it down to "passing gear") and the Scanmaster would go ape**** and show a massive (false) knock number and then decline. This would happen even before the transmission would downshift and any boost would come up. If I gently rolled into WOT, everything was fine...0.0 knock @25psi, AFRs right on point.
I was really tearing into things today trying to figure it all out thinking my poly motor mounts had worked loose, flexplate, tensioner, knock sensor, grounding issues, thrust bearing was going out, etc, etc. Once I eliminated pretty much everything that I could come up with that would cause false knock, I decided to take the car out for a little spin. The same thing happens, only this time I pull into my driveway and the transmission is moaning slightly. I put it in park, rev the motor and a decent cloud of smoke comes rolling up from under the car. I quickly take a peek underneath and notice tranny fluid seeping out from between the gasket, so I quickly shut her down. Be reminded that I had just been underneath the car checking for endplay on the crank so this had just happened. It's not like something I missed beforehand or anything. Anyhoo, I drop the pan and find this metal ring in three different pieces in the pan (see attached pics). The fluid was nice and cherry red still, fluid level was good just before driving, nothing was hot, car was shifting gears just fine prior and nothing stood out as looking amiss when peeking at the internals of the transmission. There was a slight amount of clutch "mud" at the bottom and a few small slivers of metal, but not very much. This is a twice rebuilt 200 with a 9" Art Carr non-lock converter with about 3-5k miles on her this go 'round.
Sooooo, what happened guys?
