i just want to verify something before i go messing around in the garage.

im getting some audible knock at low boost and nuthin on the scanmaster is showing....
well i did my summer tune up (plugs, wires, coil) and i finally replaced my pump and hotwired it
well i got the adjustable regulator today and before i go screwing wth it i wanted to ask something
Generally when a car has a metal pinging sound does that mean the car is lean on fuel? or too rich?
i was going to start thje regulator on the stock pressure and turn it up or down pending on how this question is answered

im just not sure on which way to go with it, becuase i am gettin some pinging on 94 octane and my O2's have never seen more then .802 on the SM
so i assumed that since my o2's are right around perfect that it would not be lean? but yet it is still pinging like crazy and i know that isnt healthy at all for Mr headgasket.
so do you think it is a good idea to just to turn it up a few pounds and see if it goes away? i

i am running a stock turbo with a v-1 intake and a mark H cold air kit
throw me opinions at me, thanx alot =)

or is you want to talk to me directly look me up on AOLl

I dont know the answer to your rich/lean question, but I most definately wouldn't turn the boost up any.

02s can be incredibly innacurate, and the numbers can vary from car to car for the sweet spot. If I were you I would err on the side of rich instead of lean. Hopefully someone can toss something out that will actually be useful for you.

How old is your O2 sensor. I have seen O2's do some really strange things. Sometimes they go completly dead, or they get lazy and don't switch rapidly, i have seen them not be able to read any higher then .6 volts when the car is running way rich. I change my O2 every two years. I run a heated one so it lasts longer with leaded race gas. I would defintly turn the pressure up though, it isn't going to hurt the motor running on the rich side but it will if your on the lean side. Maybe you got some bad gas? I have had that happen too. Put in some 93 and there was no way it was. That was from citgo, never went back there again.

He says hes getting audible knock at low boost already. I wouldnt mess with higher boost when you already have a problem.

Fp

Guys - I think he wants to know if he should up the FP NOT the boost....

I am also unsure of what I should have my FP at. With this ATR Pitbull chip I have been playing with - it knocks like crazy when i'm really on it.

I think for me to use that chip I have to up the FP a bit.

Adding more fuel doesn't always cure knock...Adding higher octane fuel almost always will lessen or cure it though...

You can actually cause knock by adding to much fuel...It's called Rich knock...

Tune your car so that the O2s are about 800-820 at WOT...If you are still getting knock, add octane...If adding octane cures your knock, then you need to get another chip with lower timing...No other way around that...

This is where scantools should be one of your first purchases after upgraded fuel pump, adj fpr, boost gauge, THEN scantool, AND LASTLY, an aftermarket chip...Find out what is going on with the scantool first, and then figure out ways to correct it...NOT by all kinds of bolt-on parts and then try to figure out why your car runs like dog-sh*t...

Sorry, kind of continued my rant in here...I'll try to refrain myself next time...

welp i finally got my chip from jay carter, i was using a thrasher
i think with switching chips and gapping my plugs a lil tighter and changing my igniton module it seemed to cure alot of my pinging
tho i have yet to matt this sucker yet, im sorta nervous to, lol

i am running the scanmaster and i had a quick question.....
this is basically a daily driver
i hear that o2's are more important for WOT then they are for just daily driving
im just not sure if its sposed to be between 750-800 at WOT or 750-800 at any cruising speed

so say i have 8 pounds of boost at 1/2 throttle and my o2's look a lil lower then 750, should i give the fuel pressue a few extra pounds? or do the values only refer to WOT

thanx for all the help fellas, i do appreciate it, its hard to get advice on these cars,

cuz no1 else seems to know nothing about "them real nice looking black monte carlos";)

You want to look for 02s at WOT or at a strong constant acceleration at most other times the numbers should be all over the place. I still wouldn't get that pedal near the floor until you have absolutely 0 audible knock. Most people tune for 1-2 degrees max, and that is nowhere near the audible range.

If you are low on 02s you should up the fuel pressure, most chip makers suggest a starting place with new chips. If Jay didn't make a suggestion send him an e-mail I'm sure he would be glad to help.

I know what its like to have to wait to try out the new toy, (After installing my IC i found out my main bearings were shot and I'm fixing those tommorrow after 3 months) but it is the best way to do it if you want to keep your car in one peice and save your money for mods and not repairs.

FJM568 - No i'm glad you said so.

Its the only way guys like me get to learn.....

holy sh!t,i think you're reading my mind here...:D

look gals,i don't know why anyone is even mentioning audible knock.your ears can't tell what your engine is doing.i can tell you from experience that an over-rich condition will cause popping out the exhaust(it's unburnt fuel, still burning on it's way out).you must have a scan tool(or at least a knock gauge)to know wtf is going on!if you hear popping and there is no kr(with a known good knock gauge/sensor)you are probably rich.

later,sean

btw,wot o2's are the only ones that mean anything.you want it as lean as it can be without detonating at the top of 3rd gear.
