Need a little help here with my shifter

On my 82 Regal I have some real slop in my shifter. Its on the column. Well when I the transmission in drive the shifter says its in neutral. Does anyone know how to fix this?????

There is a clip that holds a wire on the outside of the steering column. As the column rotates, the clip rotates with it and pulls the wire. The wire pulls the needle for the PRNDL.

The wire comes out just under the speedometer. You may need to remove the covers under the column and the clip might be hiding on top of the column. Once you find it, slide back and forth until it's where it should be.
