Doing a search didn't really help me out with this. I need a new MAF sensor for my 87 GN. I robbed the stocker off it to put on my 84 GN being I just converted it to 87 ECM. I want the best one possible that is the same diameter as the stock one. Car is not a racer and mostly stock. Does have a K&N filter. I will buy one of those MAF translators if I need to also. Any advice would be very appreciated. thanks

If you don't mind buying the Translator, then your best bet would be to go with the 3" LT1 Sensor, for the goals you have in mind. Far better reliablility, and the remanufactured stock Buick units on the market are for the most part, trash.

Agreed. You are best off going with the translator and gettting an LT1 MAF. or going MAFless. But the translator and LT1 MAF is cheaper.

mass air flow sensor

I have a like new original genuine AC Delco mass air flow sensor that I bought from the Buick dealer back in 1997 as a spare in case I needed one down the road.I installed it on my GN last month because I had an issue with my translator that is now straightened out.The mass air sensor has about 200 miles on it like brand new. And yes it does have the original black and white sticker on it with the letters BW #25007861. It is missing one of the screens I took off of it a couple years back which is no big deal anyway. I'll let it go for $110.00 shipped.

I may pm you turbojd. Let me check on this

The stock MAF is a 3" correct?
So a LT1 MAF will be a direct fit?

The stock mass air is 3" correct, so is the 3" LT1 sensor, thats what I am using right now on the GN with a translator.

the LT1 and the translator is what I'll go for then. Thanks for the offer on the stocker turbojd. That is a very fair price. I'd snatch it up for a spare, but I'm sure I'll be doing the LT1 conversion on the 84 when that one goes out too.
I'm obviously new to the mass air flow sensor thing. I know where I can get a new translator, but where should I get the LT1 sensor? I'm assuming the GM dealer? What year, make, model car for the LT1 should I tell them?

Thanks for the link, but I can't find the LT1 MAF sensor, I've found the 3.5 LS1. Is the LT1 the same as what their calling the "3 inch MAF for the Impalla SS"? I'm really sorry for you having to hold my hand through this. :D
But I must've tried 10 differant searches in their search box and couldn't come up with a LT1 MAF sensor.

Does thew LT1 3" work better than a LS1 3.5" (using a translator on both obviously)? Or is the LT1 just cheaper and work as good? Im looking at upgrading and I wanted to go with the 3.5". Sorry, didnt mean to jack your thread!

Bob Bailey, the guy who invented the Translator, posted this list of different MAF applications that will work with his Translator (the idea being you'd visit your neighborhood auto recycler for the parts)....I think I read that he personally uses the 3.5 inch MAF, although, he said the 3 " works fine.

$110 for a good GM MAF is a steal! :)

the 3" LT1 will work just fine for most applications (particularly as a stock replacement). But for bigger gains the LS1 3.5" is the way to go.

I almost went to the translator set up, but a guy around town took his off because he lost some idling quality and whatnot.

I'd guess that kind of action is resultant from improper setting of the Translator box, or less than optimum chip used with the Translator.

I've had two good rebuilt MAF's from Advance Auto Parts. I did not experience what many did about five years ago when almost all the rebuilt MAFs were faulty. These guys have long memories ;)

I've got to do my coolant and fuel upgrades before I get a aftermarket chip. And realistically I won't have that all done till probably november or december being I'm going to spend big $$$ and go all out all at once (on both cars). I've got stock 87 chips in both my gn's till then. Will the LT1 MAF and translator run/perform/idle all right with the stock chip? Would I be better off just getting turbojd's stocker so at least my cars not out of commision till I finish updating and upgrading my fuel and coolant systems?

It should run OK with the stock chip....It would run a lot better and have tuning capabilities with an extender chip. :)

its the LT1 and translator for me then. I'm still going to wait about a week before ordering just in case.

In the mean time, I'll probably use my faulty stocker 87 MAF for a $25 credit at kirbans (if their still doing that), But I've got a stock 84 MAF that was working fine for me when I pulled it if anybody needs one they can have it. Probably 8 or 9 bucks for UPS shipping.

A caution here....When you see the first MAF reading with a translator and Turbo Link, it will be half what you read with a stock MAF. You'll have to change Tlink settings with a Translator too. Don't panic. :)

ONLY if he goes with the extender chip!!! It will read normal values with all other chips.
