Need coil pack replacement

The coil pack on one of my 85 GN's went out and I need to get it replaced. GM at first said they had it, but they called me back saying it is discontinued and no one has any left. I got one where I work at Napa and it is not the right size, it is not as long as the current unit, and I believe it is the unit the 86/87's use as they call for the same part # and that one# is all we show for GN's. Does anyone have a new or barley used original coil pack that they would sell to me? I have heard you can convert over to the 86/87 style but it looks like that will cost quite a bit of money. What all do I need to do that conversion. Thanks Dusty

Do a search on this, its very easy actually. Coil packs and ignition modules for the 86/87's are far cheaper and readily available when you go to replace. I have not heard any proof that they are more reliable or will make your car run better. Caspers sells the ignition module adapter and ignition module adapter plate. (so do other vendors) The plate would be easy enough to make if you know what your doing. But the price is so cheap its probably not worth bothering with. Other than those 2 parts, all you need is the 86/87 ignition module and coil pack. Just be sure and use your original firing order and ignor the #'s on the new coil pack. I picked up a used 86/87 ignition module off of ebay cheap, and bought the other 3 items new. So all in all, it wasn't that expensive, and no problems at all so far.

Oh yeah, and the 86/87 ignition module and coil pack is smaller, and quite a bit lighter also.

I found a post where it showed a Napa part# for an adapter plate to use my original 84/85 module with the 86/87 coil. So since my modules still good I guess all I need is the adapter plate and the new coil right? I dont want to have to replace my module until I have to since on caspers website it says it is $229.95

correct! make sure you hook up the wires correctly. (the ignition module to coil pack wires) I was reading on this way back when and there are some post that have them labled wrong and it goofed with some people.

So all I have to do is hook the wires up the same on the bottom of the new coil as they were on the bottom of the old one? Then ignore how the new coil says the order of 624 and 351 instead of 426 and 153 like the old coil, and hook up the plug wires just as they were on the old coil right?

You are correct on the plug wire hook up. However, I can't say for certain on the hook up of the wires on the ignition module to the coil pack. I did not bother with a coil pack adapter when I did mine as I replaced module and coil at the same time.

you can get a wells adapter and run a 86-87 coilpack on your
84-85 module at autozone too
