need help and I have returned

Hello everyone!
I have been out of the loop for a long while here (new baby), in fact so long I couldnt remember my old login ,and I changed servers. So now I am back going by cetme1!

Anyways it appears some of the parts and dealers seem to be drying up.I need some help.

I took a short 5 mile drive a few days ago and everything appeared to be fine. After about 5 miles the car really began to feel like it was "surging" badly.Almost like it was getting little fuel. Very rough idle and pushing the throttle did not seem to do anything. In fact I had to drive at 20 mph back home. I tapped on the maf with a screwdriver and it did stumble MOST of the time when I tapped it. SOOOOOO I may need a new MAF. But I am not finding any. What are us turbo guys doing these days for that?

By the way scanmaster showed NO CODES. Shouldnt it have shown that there was a problem?

My car has all the usual mods, no big chages and was running 8.3 in the 8th with lots of wheel hop.

If anyone can help I sure would appreciate it, and I am glad I finally have some free time to get back into enjoying these cars!:smile:

Use the LT1 MAF with a translator. It is possible to have a bad MAF with no codes.

How long was the car setting? How old was the gas? Put some Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner in there with a tank of fresh fuel, that will probably help a car that has not been driven too much.

Seems like a car that has not been driven will have more drivability issues than one driven regularly. The MAF is a contentious issue today. Five years ago, the rebuilt MAFs were not reliable or correctly calibrated. The stock MAFs got real valuable and have stayed that way. The newly rebuilt MAFs have become more reliable. However, many still say they are crap (but, most who say that have not tried a newly rebuilt MAF- my rebuilt MAF worked like an OEM part).

Many chose the option of replacing the MAF with a translator or MAFT Pro. So, your choice is to try a rebuilt MAF, or switch to one of the MAF eliminators. Do you have a friend with a known good MAF to try?

Our modern chip programming makes the idle rock solid with much improved drivability. I'd recommend a new chip if yours is more than two or three years old. Rough idle is most likely resultant from a vacuum leak. Have you replaced the vacuum hoses under the hood lately?

Your next modification should be an Alchy kit.

I had forgotten how helpful people were on this board.

I do drive the car a few times a week but usually only 5-10 miles taking the baby to see his grandparents.

The fuel is good and new. All hoses look great. I need to do a thorough inspection to see if anything looks obviously wrong. I have had a smell of gas the last few times I drove it, but it was running good then. Thats why I suspected the fuel pump. It sounds fine, but I still need to test it.

If I don't get a remanufactured MAF , where I can I get the "translator"?

I do have an older Thrasher chip in mine.

And I definitely want to go with alky once I have it running good again.

The Thrasher should give you a pretty good idle if my memory is correct....I think it idles in open loop, not sure.

Check your fuel pressure if you are not sure about the pump (good idea anyway with your symptoms). For the bad idle, I'd check for a vacuum leak (can leak, even if they 'look' good). Do a search on chips and you will find several vendors. Check the banner ads for a good source for parts (MAF and Translator).

Any scan tool numbers?

Just an update, I did my spring cleaning and then installed a remanufactured MAF. Car runs great once again. Very smooth!

If this one goes out I think Ill get a new maf and translater.
