OK-

this 85 turbo regal i just bought has a posi identification tag on one of the bolts, BUT

if i jack the car up with the tires in the air, i can freely spin the tires away from each other, or the same direction!

so, basically, i dont even have to hold one tire, and i can spin the other so easy i think its a one legger:confused:

i pulled the cover off this 8.5, and there IS NO "S" spring or clutch packs, that rules out the factory posi rear.

i took pictures, and there are 4 spider gears, a part that looks like a HUGE "I" on one side, and the other side has 2 dowels and one spins on this really big fine tooth gear on the drivers side.

there is a very small spring between the two dowels, and something that looks like a flap???

what style is this?

the gear part number is 1 GM 1235128-----12------41-----5----85

41 divided by 12 is 3.4166666 making it a 3.42, and 5-85 is when it was made.... makes me think GM stuck a POSI tag on a one legger???!?!?!?!??!

thanks so much for any help, i took a bunch of pics if anyone wants to take a peek.

WHAT?!!??!?!?!?!!??!

what the **************;)

you mean to tell me that this is a damn wiz bang rear end in my 8.5?!!?!?

i had a S-10 that had that with the V8 in there, not sure if i really liked it or not-

dont tell me that the factory did this, possibly sometime down the road someone put that in there?

sounds like either the stock posi went out, and someone just put the stock gear back on that wiz bang 8.5 carrier-

that sucks :(

thanks for the help Pete

That picture is of a Gov Lock and they were found mostly in trucks. I named it the Grenade Lock since it takes out everything when it finally blows up. Check out my pictures from the one from my truck http://community.webshots.com/album/73856481AlyPmY
I sincerely doubt the factory did that. Someone had to have installed that and added the posi tag to fool whoever looked at the car. Best way to tell what the rear originally had inside is to look at the numbers stamped into the passenger side axle tube. You can find the break out of the codes/numbers at www.gnttype.org

What GNVAIR said is correct. Replace that carrier with a standard posi before you need the replace the gears too when it grenades. Those things are junk. They are really made for driving on ice or snow where there isn't enough traction to lock the clutches in a standard posi. Definately not made for a performance application. G80 only refers to some type of locking differential. - not which specific type of locking differental.

What you described is a ratchet style posi unit. It also explaines why you can turn tires in opposite directions, if you spin one tire fast enough it will lock and stop. This style has to spin aliitle bit to actuate. It is weird that its in your rear because these are used in late model trucks with 8.5 ring gear. Somebody must have swapped it before you had the car.
