Need info on '68 Chevelle SS396

A friends of mine is looking at an SS396. The car is very nice, but it no longer has the big block in it, someone put in a built 350. Can someone tell me what VIN code to look for so I know that it was orginally an SS? Any other info you could give me would be great!!

See if it has a 12 bolt rear end too. I do know that 1968 was the last year the SS396 was a distinct model and not just an option, so the car can easily be identified by the VIN. Sorry i dont know the numbers, I misplaced my book that had them since i started messing with Buicks!!

the way to tell if the car is a real SS on 1968 cars and older is the trim tag under the hood its a 3 number code like 356 ?if the car is a 1969 or newer the only way to tell if the car is a SS is if you have a build sheet the vin info will not tell you . get that number and email me i will let you know . thanks shawn
