Need New Exhaust. RJC or Pypes ?

Its time to replace my OEM exhaust. I already have a 3" DP from TA Performance that has yet to be installed. I'm trying to decide between Pypes or the 3" system by RJC. I've seen the Pypes system installed before, but have not seen the RJC system. My car has been lowered approximately 3" from stock so I need a system with good ground clearance. I've done a search & found a few threads on one or the other. Sounds like there have been fitment issues with both. Which one seems to go on the car easier than the other? Is the RJC worth the extra $'s?

I know these are different numbers but a 4" pipe will flow more air than two 2" pipes. With that being said I don't know if a 3" exhaust will flow any better than a dual 2.5" exhaust. So as far as ground clearance goes you are talking about a half inch difference. I would personally stay with 3" all the way out but that is just my opinion. If you want to go with the stock look I would go wih the Pypes. They are excellent for the price.
 
I am currently waiting on the complete RJC system from downpipe back. I looked long and hard at both the RJC and Pypes systems. Potential fitment issues aside, here's my logic in choosing RJC. First, consider the quality of material. The Pypes system is made of 409 stainless steel which is inferior to the 304 stainless RJC system. Regarding flow capacity what I've researched suggests that unless you are in a super high HP application you won't suffer any performance loss in the RJC system despite it not being "dual."

But big reazon brings up a good point. I'm not an exhaust or flow expert so just trying to use common sense with this comment. Aren't both the RJC and Pypes systems the same size at the test pipe connection? If we think about where the bottleneck is in the entire exhaust system its at the test pipe connection, not after that in the muffler and tailpipe section. So even if the dual 2.5 has more capacity than a single 3 it wouldn't matter because that's not where the flow restriction is. Am I thinking correctly here?

Regardless I'll let you know how mine fits and will take some pics to document the install.
 
For what it's worth, after the exhaust leaves the turbo, it starts to cool. As a result, it requires less pipe diameter. I can tell you from experience that the RJC doesn't fit in stock form worth a crap, especially if you have a rear end girdle. :eek:
 
Anyone with the Pypes system. Which muffler did you select & how do you like the sound level?

Also I had pypes make my system out of 304 before. It used to be an option on their site. I ran race pros but it was behind a healthy sbc and it was just right got loud when you stepped on it and just enough noise at idle for you to know it had a cam.
 
Pypes isnt 300 series stainless (400 only instead, last time I checked anyway?) but it is way cheaper. When I called and asked they said they got the SS pipe from China and bent in PA (best I remember, was 4 years ago) FWIW I have the Pypes and love it. Got the race version muffs.. Sounds good at idle, not loud at all. WOT opens up quite a bit and sounds excellent... IMO anyway. I also prefer stock look. No fitment issues on mine at all. As for flow vs 3" system, I put a 3" dump on so not sure what diff it would make anyway.... but I have noticed the turbo will spool faster with 3" DP only with no exhaust system vs 3" dump open and the exhaust system on the car.
 
Quality of RJC is second to none in what I've seen over the years of owning my GN ('92). My vote is RJC and don't look back. Good luck with whatever you choose.
 
Well... I went ahead & ordered the Pypes system with the Race-Pro muffs. It was a tough decision to make & I want to thank all for the many replies & PM's that I've received. Sounds like the RJC system has a few more fitment issues than the Pypes system. I have been able to check out a Pypes system on a GN that was sitting up on a rack. The fit was high & tight, plus I really liked the sound of it. As I said, it was a tough decision & I think that you really can't go wrong either way. I made it up to RJC by ordering one of their FMIC's. Now I'm flat broke for a while. LOL.

The Pypes package showed up yesterday. The packaging was good & no shipping damage occured.

Something I noticed right away is that they're not polished anymore. The Pypes system that I saw before had a polished finish to it. I don't know how old the other system was.
