Need opinion on upgrading turbo

Hey Guys I was seriously pondering upgrading my turbo. My goals are to get in the high ten but i dont want to lose streetability. I have 009,s but i also have 55's waiting to install. I got a 12 inch atr 2800 lockup 340walbro adj wastgate adj fuel pressure reg, and a 19 row strecthed intercooler. The block is stock with a little over 1 grand in miles. Also have alcohol kit but haven't installed it either. oh yeah i have a TE-44.

I am by no means a turbo expert but I would think a 60 series turbo would get you into the 10s. I'm running a TE60 and have been told it would take me into the very high 10s with the right combo.

Ther are many other mods you'll need to go into the 10s.

You will need a higher stall convertor to do it.

Your going to want a 3300 to 3500 stall and a te 45 from john craig or a PTE 63 or 64. Don't be afraid of a high stall converter. I was afraid of my AC 3500 19930 until I had it put in. I actually like it much better than the D5. You barely notice the difference except when you floor it!!

Yep, I have a daily driver with a 3500 stall and a LT70. Drivability is great and the tires will light up at will, even at 40mph!!!

I am changing my set up at this time. I have a T63e and have ran it with a modified D5. To much lag with the D5! You will need a 3200-3500 stall. The 55's may be enough fuel. You may need a double pumper set for the long top end pulls. I know the TE 45, T63e and PT 63 will run mid 10's but require good fuel volume.

I agree with turboman38 in getting a 60 series turbo. My additional two cents is to get a ball bearing turbo!!!!! Ball bearing turbo allow you to run a larger turbo on the street. When I was looking into upgrading my turbo I read that it takes 50% less energy to spool up a ball bearing turbo then a similar sized non ball bearing turbo. With my 60-1 ball bearing Turbonetics turbo I find this to be true!!!! I will say this, I was worried about going to big (thinking about the lag like it was a non ball bearing turbo), being a ball bearing turbo, that is much harder to do. If I had it to do all over again, I would go to an even bigger turbo, like a 62-1 (“62-1 delivers an honest 10% greater airflow than the standard 60-1”, from www.turbonetics.com).

The larger shaft in the large turbos causes an increase in lag also. The BB's will help but at a cost.

What is the cost, because I have not found one? Not disputing that there is a cost, just would like to know to be better informed. Always looking for a diff. opinion.

Believe it or not, a 44 will run 10s, but unless you want to run un-Godly amounts of boost you'll need ported iron heads at a minimum to do it...

Bigger turbos will make it easier, but are less generally less streetable and like more stall...

TE-45A & 3600 stall....second that opinion...you'll still need some more help or high boost to crack 10's, but it can certainly be done

Okay so the concensus is to go with the te45 or 63 series with the high stall converter. I would like to have a BB Turbo but thats too deep for my pockets. How much boost are you guys with the 45-63's pushing for you times, and for the pt70 i would need at the very minimum ported heads right other than a high stall converter. How much boost does the 70 need to reach high tens. MY end goal would be to reach tens on the stock block but not pushing it until it breaks.

to make a "big" turbo work ('45,63,70) you really need ported heads...I imagine you can crank the boost with stock heads but wouldn't guarantee results

I run 23 lbs boost with my 45A.....you may have to run 30 to get the same results with stock heads,cam etc

you'll need a stout tranny, trans brake, well set up suspension, slicks, good (read 116) gas along with a good 3600 stall converter (meaning 9 1/2" Precision, 9/11, etc)

I agree with Woody. I ran 23 pounds also. I new that my ETs wouldn't be there because i need a converter. I ran 121MPH and 123 mph on the last pass. I'll have a converter soon. Good Luck!!!

I saw you run at Gateway that night (wow) once you get that stall your going to be deadly.
I'm looking to upgrade my turbo as well. A TA60 / TA61 should do the trick. I think D-Day is running this turbo with a 3K stall and 009's, FMIC, with a stock motor his is going 11.20's at 118mph
I've got Mike Christman working on a set of heads for me and I think I'm going to get a 205/205 or a 210/205 cam.

The St. Louis Chapter of the GSCA tried going out there last Friday and got rained out. Fun was still had by all that came. I met a lot of nice people and learned a butt load about MAFless systems and Translators. (Still looking for a MAF) Drank a couple of beers and talked till 1am.
