I just bought a 87 Turbo regal about a month ago and when you first starts it cold it will run for 15 seconds to 2 minutes and the
RPM's will slowly drop until it dies. It re-starts with no problem but it will die again unless you holds the throttle down a bit till it gets warm, then it runs fine can anyone tell me what the problem is

Thanks

This can be a couple of things but I would first check and set your IAC. You will need a scan tool to do this. The gnttype.org will be where you can find the procedure to do this. Hope this helps.

I am a newbie to this whole thing also and you really need to do some studying,Put some serious time reading the forums and most answers will be appear. My car did the same thing when I got it and I cleaned the throttle body, put some good 93 in with some techron cleaner for the first few fill ups and cleaned/set the IAC and the tps.It went away after all was cleaned and adjusted. These cars are pretty neat but you must love them and take care of them .They require a lot of attention and patience.I bought a scanmaster and am still trying to figure it all out but will in the near future get a direct scan to get more detailed with my tuning. You have taken on quite a project but it will be worth it,Just go to school like me and ask the teachers anything you don't know.Plent y of study material on the boards and gnttype.org

What Jim said.
Also, I have found that the chip you run can make a big difference. I had a similar problem with the stock ship. Sometimes it would stall, but I always had a tip-in stumble, especially on cold starts. Then I got a Red Armstrong 93 chip. It got better, but was still there, and I have always had a little stumble. Now, with no other changes recently, I put in a Thrasher 92 (Thanks, Jim), and all is smooth as glass. Cold start stumble is gone, tip-in stumble is gone. It's like a different car!

Thanks for the help

the car I bought had been setting up for two years it just needs alot of TLC

my car had 28k in 89 then 71k in 1999,when I bought it it had 74,600 miles so it had been sitting in a garage for almost 3 years with a little over 2500 miles put on it.When I got it all the fuel related stuff were pretty gummed up,i think the woman had been putting the "good" stuff in the tank which to her was 89 octane from what she told me

Check out www.turbo-link.com for the lowdown of the various scan tools available for these cars, there is a good comparison chart there.

One BIG thing you can do to help learn about these cars, get in touch with the local Buick club. Their website is at: www.lspbc.org

I like the chip angle here...

My stock and even the ATR Pittbull chips both would "Stall" the engine, if I let it warm up for a few minutes before puttig it in gear. However, if I started the car and put it in gear right away, it would not! Changing nothing else, I installed a Ramchargers chip and this problem is gone!

BUT,

I would recommend "Spring Cleaining". It is cool that the car runs after sitting for 2 years, but you should clean up everything, check the readings of all sensors, and establish a "Baseline" on the car. What I mean is, get a ScanMaster, record all existing sensor readings (Esp MAF, O2, TPS, IAC), do a compression check, check manifold vacuum, and find out what chip you have. Write it all down! Knowing where you started from is very important. (Just try getting directions without knowing where you are... It doesn't work very well!) Even if you don't plan on upgrading components, these numbers will help you to understand the car and knowing what is "Normal" will aid in diagnosis later. Besides, it is "Fun" learning about how your car works!

I agree that the chip makes all the difference in the world once all other bases have been covered. It's always something simple.
