My ttype is throwing the vss code it's actually been there for sometime now, also my speedometer needle has also been faulty it doesn't read mph and once in a while it will bounce around a bit but most of the time it just doesn't move... To me it sounds like 2 different problems ill have to fix but I could be wrong that's y I'd like some advice first before I start backwards here if u will ... My question is can my faulty needle be the cause of the vss code coming on my scan aster? Or does that not have any affect on the vss? Where should I start with this problem?

the VSS us in the speedo head.. speedo cable is likely shot... pull the cable out of the trans and spin it with a drill in reverse.. if you have a 1000 rpm drill, it will show 60mph on the speedo if everything is working right.. if it doesn't work, then do the same thing on the other half of the cable (it will either be in the cruise control box or there will be a splice by the firewall) to see if that works.. if it does, then you need a lower speedo cable... if not, you probably need an upper speedo cable... either way, they are cheap at any parts store..

Ah ok nice tip I will definitely try that first before I start ripping into the speedo .. Thank you ... Another thing I've never taken the speedo cable off from the tranny is this difficult ? Is there a link or thread on removing this ? Thanx again

Thank you for that tip I will definitely do that before tackling anything else ... Is it hard to remove the cable from the tranny? What do I need? I haven't removed the cable from the tranny before

the cable unscrews from the side of the tailshaft of the trans.. really easy..

Would you happen to know if the section where the 2 cables separate is regular threaded (righty tighty lefty loosey)? Or reverse threaded?

Y is this sh%# so hard ! ? I'm putting vise grips on the lower cable while I try to break loose the nut and its not happening it's just stripping the other end with the vice grips .... Any suggestions ? I've sprayed it already and let it sit for a while but won't budge

What it is the overall length of the cable from the speedo to the trans? What length should the one piece be? Thanx

get a set of channel locks on the big end, and maybe go around the outer diameter and lightly "crush" it in to try to break 28 years of corrosion loose.. but don't squeeze too hard- you just want to deform it a couple of thousandths of an inch to break it loose.. if all else fails, get a propane torch in there and warm the big nut up some- then once it's nice and hot shoot some PB Blaster on it and then gently squeeze it with the channel locks to get the oil up into the threads... it will come apart eventually, but it might fight you for a while..

Thanx for the tips propane torch did cross mind ill b tackling this tomorrow and will try crushing it lightly with channel locks hope I do break it loose

Ok so I finally broke it loose and unscrewed it I tested the upper and lower cable they both spin freely and the needle moves fine so then I proceeded to remove the bullet and check the gear it's green and it looks fine to me..... Checked the orange gear inside the tranny just kinda felt it with my finger and it felt fine .... I put everything back together took it for. A spin and still no mph reading the needle would bounce to 25-35 when taking off from a stop but then just goes back and sits on 0 mph I'm not sure what the problem is anymore? Need some other ideas ? Should I just replace the cable ?

I spun it by hand and the needle did move do I really need to out a drill on it to find out?

It would be good to test it with a drill so that you can see if it does the same thing it does when hooked up to tranny.

I will do that tomorrow for sure .... How far should i see the needle go as mph ? Does it matter ?or as long as it moves up ?also what should I be looking for when using the drill should the needle remain steady at a certain mph or will it rise and keep going or maybe something else. ?

once you get to the max speed of the drill, the speedo should stay at a steady speed.. if your drill spins 1000 rpm, it should be right at 60mph..

Well good news I just went ahead and changed out the speedo cable and WALA everything is now running normal again as far as that goes my speedo needle working fine my scan master showing mph once again and code24 VSS is also gone for now .... The only codes I have are 23 iat that's because I don't have that sensor In and code 44 oxygen sensor circuit ? Does that mean a bad O2 sensor ?
