I've just begun having a knock in the engine that I think is due to a problem with the lifters. I've asked some mechanics and they've said the same thing. I'll probably have to get a new gasket set, lifters, keepers and valve cover. I'll probably get new valve springs because they've never been replaced that I'm aware of. Since the engine is going to be taken apart; what else could I, or should I replace or should have done to the engine? Estimated cost for parts would also be helpful. I have 120,000 miles on the car and engine. Would it be worth getting a partial engine rebuild, and how much would that cost about?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

What are the symtoms of your engine problem? How does it run? Smoking? Tapping? Missing? Having this info will allow for better advice.

Seems to be running fine, outside of the knocking noise which will speed up as the engine revs higher. After driving it for a little bit, seems to quiet down a little, but still starts out loud after sitting for a while. I have an ANS knock detector, which has been going off more than usual since the noise. I haven't really driven the car too hard since I've had the noise, so not sure how its impacting performance over 20-30 mph.

Knocking noise? That doesn't sound good. Maybe you just have a broken rocker shaft. Check it out.

sometimes cam sensors wear and make noises

Anytime there is a knocking noise the owner of the car tries to blame the noise on everyting but a rod. In every case it always seems to be a rod too.

Ticking is not knocking, is there a tick or a knock?

Exactly.

but wouldnt rod knock be a constant knocking?? And it doesnt make sense that knocking goes away after the car har run for a while, When running the car for a while wouldnt that give the oil a chance to heat up consequently making it thinner, making a more profound knock   I really am clueless but am just trying to understand.. With a sticky lifter it could come and go as it pleases as he has stated.. yes, no, maybe??

I would say the other way around. Rod knocks can go away temporarily by changing viscosity of the oil or only during accelerating the motor with no load or only when you put a load on the motor. many different ways to make it appear and disappear. A collapsed lifter seems to be constant.

Share my experience with your situation. I had the "valve train" noise and thought it was normal. Never opened the motor up. Then it got real bad. Pulled the valve cover to find #3 intake pushrod went through the rocker arm. Replace both banks just because. Put it back together, it ran horrible at the track. Pulled the valve cover again, cranked the motor over and watched the #3 exhaust rocker arm barely move. Tore the motor down and did the cam, timming chain and lifters. The cam I took out had a wiped lobe. Now I do not have any really audible valve train noise at all with new stuff. I say that to say this. If the lobes are wearing on your cam, the valvetrain tolerences are increasing which allows room for the lifters, push rods and rocker arms to slap each other and produce ticks instead of working in harmony. Just something to look into. Do it once and do it right while you are taking it apart.
