Need Turbo help

Need Turbo help....Rebuild time???

I purchased a new TE44 about 4 years ago and it now has about 5300 miles on it. I know there can be some "up and down" play in the shaft and should no in and out play in the shaft that is noticeable, I was checking the play in my turbo because the car is smoking at idle and I noticed no horizontal (in and out) play in the turbo, but it just barely has enough play in it vertically to rub the housing. Is it time for a rebuild, or does the engine oil pressure keep the impeller off the housing. I couldn't see where it was rubing at all but I suspect it's time to rebuild. Thank You.

I suspect you already know the answer to your own question.
If you have enough play in your turbo to contact the housing during your impromptu test,then you know that in a short while or sooner you'll be doing a rebuild or replacing it.
Who built it the last time?
