I have a problem. When I access a site such as Yahoo, MSN, etc. When I try and search the web from their search box it pulls up "Page Cannot be found" it says on the bottom of the page HTTP 404 File Not Found Internet Explorer. Any advice on how to fix this. TIA Carlos

Forgot to mention I have Windows XP Prof.

make sure you didn't accidentally click the "work offline" option. Also, if you have a firewall it may not be setup correctly.

FWIW & IMHO:
I have windows XP pro, I use msn as internet provider, and I use msn homepage, and search through the msn homepage. No problems here.

The work offline is not selected and I am on a Linksys Router. But really dont know how to screw around with the firewall stuff. LOL let me jack with it alittle. Thanks

ipconfig

Click start > run > type cmd > hit enter now type ipconfig /all What does it say your dns servers are?

Make sure your security settings haven't been messed with. If you have them adjusted to HIGH or if you have java turned off you may get that.

Try it using Netscape Navigator.

right click "My network places"
go to "properties"
Right click "local area connection"
go to properties
go to the "advanced" tab
make sure the "Internet connection firewall" checkbox is not checked

unless you know what to do here and have it configured correctly.

I know this option screwed me in the past at work when deploying about 100 machines

I did everything yall guys said, except the "ipconfig" whenever I type it and click ok a window wants to pop up but it closes out right away cant see anything. The internet connection firewall box is not check. Anything else. Thanks guys

run cmd

run type cmd then hit enter then type ipconfig /all

Can you go right to the website to get to the search are you opening in New Window? There are known issues with IE 6 displaying this message when trying to open in new window. Microsoft KB article 180176.

Also I would say clear out internet cache and temp IE files by going through tools - internet options

are you on cable or dsl?
Is this a new set up/has it ever worked?
did you just add the router?
are there other computers on this router/do they work?

I have Road Runner Cable, I have eliminated the router, and its not a new set up, it worked for about a year, had this problem about 3 months now, and I only use the computer for online gaming but I wanna fix it. Thanks Carlos

are those the only sites you cant reach, i mean you can get here, is it the same computer?

I have Yahoo as my homepage. I can type in a web address in the address box and I have no problems doing that. Its when I'm on a page like Yahoo and I use the search box. I'll type anything in the box that I wanna search for and I get: Page Cannot be Found error. Thanks

Try going to a website you dont normaly go to like microsoft.com.
See if you can connect. Yahoo may be cached and you really arent connected. It may be a problem with your internet provider.

When you do an ipconfig from dos window, what does it say on the Connection-specific DNS suffix?

I can access any website, its the searching that I'm having problems with. Thanks for your help guys I appreciate it. I guess I'm gonna have to take it somewhere and get fixed. Thanks Carlos

Dude, please dont take that pc to a shop/ your problem doesnt make any sense. Sounds like you are just going to dead sites or something, what are you looking up? Pig scrotums?

try installing spybot and doing the updates then run a scan, also install ad-aware both can be downloaded from www.download.com there might be some kind of spyware/crapware installed blocking you from using any other search engine but theirs. sounds like it to me from your symptoms
