This is a new aftermarket Wells MAF that I tried and does not work, stalls as soon as I plug it in. What is the likely hood that it is no good? I believe I have read that it is more common than not. Thanks

From my experience, it’s a high likely hood of issues. My Wells coil pack and module was shit out of the box.

I like to get newer style oem from the wrecking yard and use the translator with these newer style maf units. I've yet to get a usable replacement maf of any brand to work. Not sure why they are so hard to calibrate or what the issue is but they just don't work for some reason or other.

Few years back i went through 5 brand new ones in a row that were no good, go for a lt1 and a translator

Unless it's 100% essential that you have a stock MAF because it's some low mile garage queen then the best solution as stated above it a Translator and LS MAF. Works just fine and has the added benefit of higher flow through it.

Plus they are readily available from most automotive retailers , unlike the stock MAF sensor

Maybe some one locally can bring over a working MAS for you to try and see if that's really your problem.
Its easy to miss diagnostic a problem and blame a good working part.

After my Wells coil gave out after just 10 heat cycles, started knocking at cruise and popping at 5 psi, and now my used Delco coil is failing too, random knocking at cruise and breaking up under boost, it’s definitely TR-6 time. Crazy that the Buicks are over 38 years old. Big thanks to everyone who continues to bring new tech to our cars.

On one of my cars i run a Coil and module right out of autozone.
Fires e85 and methanol injection and nitrious to 7000+rpm.
The stock maf i had no luck with
As others have stated a translator with an ls1 or even better a z06 maf and an axis setup is the way to go.
