thanks, just picked up a real sweet 87 gn after a lot of looking. Car has 28000 miles and runs great. I have a lot of questions. The car has a hypertech stage ll chip, 160 stat, intercooler deflector and what looks like a stainless flowmaster. Is this a decent set up for this car? I don't race but would like a mid 13 sec. ride. Car seems very fast......what other mods would get me where I want to go? I am very impressed with this board and the expertise demonstrated and realize my question is very basic but any responses would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Get a different chip, dump the flowmaster for a straight through design...tune!

Have fun!:)

wow! thanks....any more infor greatly appreciated. How good is that hypertech. Is it better than the stock chip which I still have?

i think the hypertech is an old chip. there are better ones out there. thrasher makes nice chips w/some nice features for $25. also you might want to look into a hotwired walbro 340 fuel pump, scanmaster and boost guage. you should be all set to tune and run safely w/this stuff. then come the mods:D

IMO you need to do the following just to be safe:

Better fuel pump - Walbro 307, 340 and Red's XP pump are all good. Factory one just does not cut it.

Adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

Boost, oil and water temp gauges to monitor things.

Scanmaster would also be at the top of the list - This will tell you what the engine is doing while your racing it. Most importantly your knock counts. Anything more than 5 knock counts is very very bad.

With those things and a good chip you will be in the 13s real easy. In fact if you get a good race chip, test pipe with a cut out, tune it properly and can hook the car up you should be able to go high 12s.

What he said. These are the basics to know what's going on.

I can only go on my experience, but I would definitely get the car tuned correctly in stock form and add the suggested parts from the above posts. I bought my 87 GN last November, 130k and all stock. After a tune up and a brake job I took it out to the track the best time I ran was 14.8 on stock radials. Unfortunately my trans took a dump a few weeks later. After a good trans rebuild with upgraded parts I added a cold air intake and a new set of 245/60/15 radials and back to the track 14.3 still breaking the tires loose at the line 0-2 lbs of boost, 60 ft 2.3. I then decided to avoid the rash of sh!t from my mustang buddies and added a set of ET streets, dp, AFPR and powerplate. 13.6 at 98 MPH 60' time still sucked but I am still learning to drive this beast. I installed a walbro 340 w/hotwire new rear springs and shocks, new exhaust and thrasher chip. Haven't gotten back out to the track but with a better launch and race gas I should be in the 12's no problem. My advice is to take your time and enjoy working on the car and learn as much as possible from this board, I know I have! Good Luck!
