New converter = new noises?

I put a new converter in my car over the weekend. I accidentally drove the car for about a mile when the trans was 3 quarts low. As soon as I realized it was slipping I brought it back and put more fluid in it. Once I corrected the error I took it back out and it was fine.

I drove it 25 miles to work today and it works awesome - just like it did before but with more stall (went with a 3400 9x11 converter). No slippage off the line or WOT at highway speeds. Shifts really hard into 2nd and the TC locks hard enough that it feels like a 5th gear ("normal" behavior since the Level10 rebuild a couple of years ago).

While moving it through the gears to check the fluid, I noticed a different noise than usual in reverse 2nd, and 1st. The noise does not appear in 1st or 2nd when it's in D or OD. It's not a whine, more like a fluid moving around type noise. It's not real loud - I can only hear it with the windows down.

Would a 9x11 converter make a different noise than, say, my old 10.5" converter? Or have I damaged my pump?

TIA,
Jim

Sounds like you may have a leak at the filter to pump connection

If they don't seal well there, they will pull air. Maybe pull the pan back down and have a look?

I didn't have the pan off of it. I think it was still low on fluid. It was halfway up the hash marks on the stick. I added another quart which brought it up a little above full and it quieted down substantially. It still makes a slightly different noise in R, 2 and 1 but nothing alarming (I don't think).

Maybe I still have a bunch of air in it? It took 8 quarts of fluid (plus the 1/2 in the converter) so it was pretty empty.

Thanks,
Jim

When in Reverse, Low1, Low2, you have boosted pressure. Probably a pressure valve buzz. If you were to run a trans on a tranny dyno, you would hear the same thing. Throw a gage on it and you will hear it when the pressure rises. You can also get the same noise when at idle and you pull the TV cable out to full pressure.

Eric is right on the money.

So it's not necessarily a bad thing? It may have been doing it before but not as loud. I'm not sure since I really had no need to pay attention to noises under there until now.

Thanks everyone.
