Seriously considering buying a 02-04 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup with a Cummins diesel motor to tow my TR. Anybody have experience good and bad with this truck. Please be specific
thanks,
Mitch

I bought my 03 in July and really like it. I've pulled both open and enclosed car trailers and it does a great job. If I had it to do over again the only changes I would make would be to find an 03 with the HO engine (305 HP) and 48RE Automatic Transmission. I've got the standard output Cummins (250 HP) and it strains a bit pulling the mountains. The 48RE, I'm told, is beefier than the 47RE tranny in my truck. Great pulling machine and excellent choice.

Take a look at the new ones. Deals and rebates galore.

Mitch,

I can tell you Mike Sonnamaker did not have problem pulling my car to and from Noble. The only thing I would say based on Mike's suggestion is to go with a 4X4 since the axles are heavier duty. Mike can explain it better than me.

Happy Huntings!

Get am 03 or newer with 48re tranny. The motor is much quieter. Get an edge EZ programmer or chip, whatever it is and you will never downshift while towing an enclosed trailer again.

Thanks Jack and all posters. Now, if I can just find a dealer that is really motivated to sell a truck at a reasonable price.

Make sure you get the 3.55 gears. Any more gear than this is TOO MUCH.

3.55's allow for easy 80 mph cruising on the highway.

If you wait 6 monyhs, or so the 2004 1/2 is going to have a higher rating....600 ft lbs. I think its called the cummins 600.

Doesn t really matter if your goi ng to do some mods anyways though. My 98 12 v is at 900...it drives like a 5.0 mustang, which isn t bad for extended cab duallie @ 8600 lbs.

There was /is a problem of some of the 03's pulling to the right and they can t seem to correct it.

I think that's mostly good advice, UNGN. However, I've got 3.73's and went from 265-70/17 tires to 315-70x17 tires and I almost wish my truck had 4.11's in it due to increased tire height. If you keep the 265's on, look for 3.55 gears.

Dodge Cummins H.O. w/ the 6-spd tranny is the strongest factory truck that I've ever driven. Plan on having one in 1-2yrs. :D

Totally agree, but wanted an automatic so my wife could drive it. What a joke, she won't even attempt to drive it. If I'd have known, I would have gone for the six speed.

Since this is related....

Last week, thursday I think, traffic was a mess, both freeways were parking lots etc...I end up going up a dirt road with a bunch f other cars. After about a mile everyone is turning around, the road is blocked. They had a couple barriers up with large dirt mounds bolcking the gaps. The mounds had to be around 50 inche high, like from a large bucket loader. I was pretty upset by then so I decided to take the mound out to get through to the paved road just on the other side. I could see the dirt as I pulled up to it, so it was hood high and I drive a 4x4 duallie 98 dodge.

I hit it about three times, as it gets pushed down a bit. Then I head over it, pretty much high centering my truck, but I still wasn t in 4 wheel drive, so I put it in four wheel, get out backwards, then go once more over it completely....Traffic started to take my path, andafter a couple trucks it was just a large bump by then. A guy catches up to me a block later and is screaming at me that that was one of the coolest things his seen in along time, and It felt GOOD TOO. I did have some rocks in the grill though.

Now that I have my dodge I don t know how I got along with out it.
Its a 98 12 valve (the gooder engine) 4x4 dualie 5 speed, with some decent work to it. They respond like tr's! It also can tow anything.

I heard ford was buying back trucks, 500-1000 and they have ended there relation ship with navastar to supply there light truck engines.....figures.

grrrreat topic, just wished i had seen this earlier today-

i have one of those 2002 HO loud diesel motor:D 6 speed dodge trucks, and i bought it to keep for ever. Honestly it is exactly what i wanted, and has not let me down yet after almost 18,000 miles of highway towing and driving.

the only real problems for the 98-02 is the electric lift pump goes out and starves the VP44 rotary injector pump... if you do buy a dodge i would definitely upgrade that lift pump to a carter electric pump from jegs so it doesnt mess things up in the future.

the 4x4 seem to hold their resale value, but if you live in nicer climates and dont warrant the need for 4X4 then the 2x4 trucks get a little bit more MPG cause of the less weight and one less axle.

mine is patriot pearl blue, 4x4 3500 dually HO 6 SPEED extended cab with all the options except heated leather... i bought it brand new for 32,100 and the sticker was 39,000 and change. i didnt even buy it from a guy i know who works a dodge dealer, i walked into 3 stealerships and went straight for the punchline, what do you got, and how much!!!!

if you go to 3 dealers and get them to compete, usually they will drop the price 7K off the sticer price of the new trucks.

if your looking for a used one, there are 1000s for sale in texas

ps in comparison, the horsepower boxes on these trucks takes them from a 6 banger mustang to a new v8 mustang. not super fast, but what a big difference!

I've had two different Ram 2500 Diesels - a 2001 Quad Cab long bed and a 2003 Quad Cab Short bed, both were 4x4's. The '03 was an H.O. and both had Six Speed manuals.

The '03 was stronger (which it should have been due to the higher HP/Torque numbers) but both trucks were animals.

My next one will be an '04 with the 600 Cummins and the 48RE automatic. I've driven the Duramax, the Powerstroke (both the old and newer high output versions) and the Cummins - there is absolutely NO comparison.

I currently have an '03 HEMI and love it but I miss the Cummins. Soon...

If you want the best one out there then there is no choice - Cummins/Dodge.

I have the 03 Ram 2500 with the HO and 6 speed and like it very much. Pulls my enclosed trailer (9000# loaded) VERY well and with 7000 miles is finally starting to break in and getting 13 mpg with the trailer and 20 with out at a 70 mph roll.

The 2003 makes my last Dodge (98 with HO) feel like a slug :)

Good Luck

Well, just for grins, i went last night and looked at an 02 ford F250 with their diesel. I am sure the motor would do me just fine, but the Ford kills Dodge in the back set room. The 4-dr comparison gives it to Ford. Any comments to that. I do have 3 kids

I had an '01 F250 Super Duty Crew Cab/Short Bed with the 5.4 Triton. It was a slug power-wise but the room was great in the cab front and back. However, it was dimensionally too big and bulky at times.

Great truck though!

Your talking about a Ford crew cab? If so, I just don't like the crew cab look. I think i'm going to be selling my 02 2500 and getting a Duramax. They are both evenly priced and I can get a great deal from my local dealer. Still trying to deceide.
